Re: VERDICT IS REACHED!

Reagan. I know LJ was a Reagan fan but FFS. We know Reagan cut a deal with Iran to release those hostages as soon as he was inaugurated - and yes, I am sure it wasn't a crude quid pro quo but an absolute understanding. And while Biden is castigated for the 13 soldiers who died when the last helicopt...

Re: VERDICT IS REACHED!

Some part of me wants to see him sentenced to time behind bars and then to see that commuted by Gov Hochul after a few days but before his appeals start to wind their way through. To see him having to accept a commutation of his sentence from a D Governor would be worth it. He would parlay an orange...

Re: South Africa votes, ANC to lose majority

A Ramaphosa / Zuma alliance is a match made in hell. They probably have more in common than they would ever care to admit but they would be partners in corruption. With Mandela and even Mbeki and the world's goodwill I thought they had a chance. Mbeki (a fellow University of Sussex alum) did some go...

Re: VERDICT IS REACHED!

Mitch O'Connell is saying that he expects the convictions to be overturned on appeal.

Question - can Trump go straight to SCOTUS or does he have to go via NYS Court of Appeals? And, in fact, in NYS there are lower level appellate courts. Does he have to go to each in turn?

Re: VERDICT IS REACHED!

I've had the champagne for a while pending a guilty verdict. But somehow I am not as joyous as I expected to be. Yes he's guilty; yes he deserves punishment (but I am disgusted by the number of business people who get away with similar crap but they are not so stupid that they also run for president...

Sorry I spoke . . .

I keep a landline because - and maybe this is false reasoning - it seems that my junk calls go there and my phone tells me it's a 'Spam Risk' and if it's real, whoever will leave a message. I get very few spam calls on my mobile. I do get spam texts, however. Usually they are, I assume, the sort des...

You did a good job there CP. He'll have to deal with being labeled 'woke' by various idiots but it sounds as if he will be OK.

Re: 'Justice' Alito's wife did it

And now it seems that Alito was flying the 'Appeal to Heaven' flag outside his beach house. NYT has several pics; and makes the case that this flag - which has an honorable history through George Washington and John Locke, signifying defiance - has become a MAGA - Stop the Steal - Jan 6 symbol. Alit...

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/article/2024/may/18/judge-juan-merchan-trump-trial-political-contributions According to the Guardian, Judge Merchan who is overseeing Trump's Stormy Daniels trial in NY donated $35 to the Democratic Party in 2020. And apparently the NY Commission of Judicial Condu...

'Justice' Alito's wife did it

During January 2021, while SCOTUS was considering the 2020 election results and whether to intercede (they didn't although C Thomas dissented loudly), an upside-down US flag was displayed outside Alito's home in Alexandria VA. Apparently it was, according to neighbors, up for several days. An invert...

Re: SETI

There is a Project CETI (a sort-of-pun on SETI where the C stands for cetaceans - whales, dolphins etc) which focuses on the sounds made by a group of sperm whales in the Caribbean, and how they communicate. Recently researchers have decided that the clicking sounds made by these whales are actually...

Re: Gaia on Fire

I oscillate between extreme pessimism and hope. Part of me thinks that the earth is fucked and climate migration in a decade or so will make today's border crisis look puny; and the great wars of the 20th century will be surpassed by those of the 21st. But most years for the past 15 or so, I have be...

Re: Rebels Without a Clue

I was there in Kent one day 1998-ish. It wasn't the anniversary - the daffodils on the hill were out, and the spots where the four students died were well marked. I was an ocean away when it happened, but it was devastating to us all the same. Antisemitism has a long history from Shylock through blo...

Re: A local story

I haven't been following this case - but didn't we have a situation in the last few years in which a father who had left his child in a car - child died of heatstroke - was tried for murder although there was no evidence (IIRC) that there was no intent? May be different laws in different states.

Re: Israel at War

The two things Reagan pushed were 'Brilliant Pebbles' which was space based and consisted of thousands of satellites equipped with missiles to attach incoming ICBMs; and project Excalibur which used laser beams. Neither came to anything, IIRC.

A local story

Jamey Noel was Sheriff of Clark County IN (just across the river from Louisville) until an investigation by Indiana State Police led to his arrest last November. He is accused (and of course he is presumed innocent unless he is found guilty) of using something like $5 million of public funds for his...

Re: Johnson & Trump Want to Outlaw Illegal Things......

This week will be 40 years exactly since I moved to the US. I thought it would be for three months but I'm lazy - they kept paying me so I thought I'd stay a while. I'm not a citizen so I don't vote - still pay $2000 every few years for my green card - I have never felt the urge to become a citizen ...

And the loopies are out in force. Daily Mail is reporting that 23 Ohio River barges broke free in Pittsburgh, and the local cops closed down the downstream McKees Rock Bridge as a precaution. Makes sense to me and well done those cops. In the comments section we have this from JulesBoys who apparent...

You're right RR - it was the prosecution - I just looked it up. So my point about calling him for cross-examination is wrong.
