Re: Okay, Pretend You are a Slave....

You may be right Sue, but I do think a realistic empathy is a skill well worth developing for anyone, which is probably what underlies my initial response.

Re: Okay, Pretend You are a Slave....

Sue--I don't agree; I think considering oneself in a particular situation can be valuable to getting a personal understanding of a articular situation. Yes, as I conceded, it will not be accurate, but it could cause a recognition of some of the choices faced. Sure, the Walter Mittys of the world wil...

Re: Okay, Pretend You are a Slave....

Maybe it's not suitable for a freshman in high school, but I do think the question does help student to consider the issues surrounding historical events muchmore deeply than just memorizing facts. FWIW, I don't think the other questions at the end (other than the Tesla one), could provide similar i...

Re: Poll: Should the FISA court be shut down?

Should the FISA court be shut down? There is danger involved without having the ability to spy on potential threats; they would have an easier time operating in the US. But freedom is worth the loss of some life. I dare you to visit the relatives of those who died in the Murrah Building in OKC, or ...

Re: RIP RBG

Andy--if Trump were smart (which we know he is not) he would announce that he would not make an appointment until after the election; it woudl give him the 5-3 majority and would give the republicans whose seats are in jeopardy an out (since a vote for his candidate in Oct could only lose them votes...

Re: Up In Smoke

I think that's right, Guin, thanks. I guess it is more of a physician's order for the drug, as only approved drugs, and medical devices and services are "prescribed".

Re: Up In Smoke

Sure, it sounds familiar; but the sad thing is it has been that way for decades under many administrations.

Re: Masks more effective than vaccines

Scooter--I think that is true for N95 medical grade masks, and not the cloth or paper ones ordinarily worn by the general public, where the protection (especially for the wearer, is much less. But my main concern is that the comments play right into the hands of the anti vaxers who will claim why in...

Masks more effective than vaccines

Yesterday, Trump's idiocy passed on to his CDC head, when Rosenfeld stated that masks might be even more effective at stemming the spread of Covid 19 than a vaccine would be. He didn't even attempt to qualify or explain it, just gave a blanket misleading statement, which plays right into the hands o...

Re: Up In Smoke

BB--Marijuana (cannabis) is still a Schedule 1 drug on the DEA list, which means it has no known medical use and cannot be prescribed (just like heroin). Some states permit it to be prescribed, or even sold over the counter, but this is till contra to federal laws. Indeed, many marijuana growers avo...

Would a parrot qualify as a poet?

Or maybe they're trying to screen out rappers?

My hair is approaching my post ROTC college length--about shoulder length on the sides, longer in the back; I have a pretty good pony tail now, longer than Jefferson's.

Re: I need a haircut

I don't know why the licenses use that name, but my guess is to make it unisex; a number of years ago they merged the barber and beautician (or maybe hairdresser) licenses into a single license, and I think that's when they changed the name. FWIW, they also have an esthetician license for people who...

It sounds like your state has a reasonable approach; my daughter has a cosmetologist license in NJ and recently received a general notince reminding cosmetologists that they could not could provide house calls or perform services in their own location (other than a licensed salon) unless the person ...

Re: You really, really, REALLY couldn't make this shit up

I recall that Times article, but never understood how it worked. As I recall, we had to get a physical from the military (or something like that) which advised the Draft Board so it could classify us. For a medical exemption (4F) I would imagine that the Board physician would have to concur (althoug...

Well, I've already given my view on these guidelines, but they do raise issues that are, IMHO, more than worthy of discussion.

Re: Lord Jim & RayThom & grieving

What you point out happens to most multi-season series, as melodrama is always easier to write than smart dialogue and storylines. It's the rare series that doesn't degenerate into the soap opera.
