Just another reason to dump the death penalty in its entirety.

Re: The Hammer
So even in the military uniform the private and the General are both constrained by the laws Indeed they are, but all members do give up some rights to serve--the right to speak ones mind and post on sensitive issues, the right to travel where you want, even the right to choose to no longer associa...

Re: The Hammer
Would you give up some of your liberties to preserve it? Dpends what you mean; if you mean being in the military, I served in the army reserve for a number of years and, yes, voluntarily surrendered some of my personal liberties to do that. But if you mean bringing in some sort of strongman or olig...

Re: Charlottesville
The people advocating for violence at anti-war protests in the 60s and 70s I just assumed were FBI agents I'm sure some were, but we did see how some things became quite violent. There was a lot of anger, nad I recall brick/stone throwing and calls to burn it down--maybe FBI, maybe legitimate (and ...

Re: Charlottesville
Sue--I'm not arguing the issue of whether the statues should stay up or not, only saying that there are a number of reasons, valid or not, that people would think they should. And while I agree we all should "stamp out racists and Nazis at every opportunity", I'm not about to let the nazis decide my...

Re: Charlottesville
Or "show me your friends and I'll show you what you are". The problem is political movements attract all kinds; I recall the increasing violence in the 60s antiwar movement and, while it eventually drove me away (after briefly flirting with embracing it), I didn't shy from demonstrations initially b...

Re: The Hammer
Instead of going to prison, they could have been turned into American assets. Or not; why do you assume they had ties to/knowledge of terrorist organizations? Because of their ethnicity or religion? Or because they were supposedly under FBI surveillance (albeit not that high a priority surveillance...

Re: The Hammer
Or do you not believe that national security takes precedence over everything? Everything? Absolutely not, Number one, because the claim of national security is the claim of every despot and scoundrel. Number 2, I think individual rights take precedence over national security because without those ...

Re: Pope Francis
I always look forward to funerals; they're such fun. But I guess Trump wants to make sure one of his sane, high profile critics is actually dead, so maybe he is looking forward to attending. The man is an ass. ETA: Personally, I would prefer if the president, any president, did not travel to the fun...

Re: Pope Francis
It goes with the job; as Jesus said, a well person is not in need of a physician. The pope has had to meet with a lot of sick people--Vance is just one.it makes me sad that he had to endure even a very few minutes with that evil prick on his last Easter on earth.

Re: Pope Francis
As for Luke 4:18, IMHO one way the RC church could help the destitute is by shifting its position on birth control, which continues to keep many in perpetual poverty. But maybe this is for another thread.

Re: The Hammer
God knows of course and it is all part of Gods great and loving plan. That's the tough part, to reconcile a "great and loving plan" with he Holocaust, or the Crusades. Or the Inquisition. Or... It is up to each of us to achieve that reconciliation as best we can; personally, I see these things as p...

Actually, I believe he did travel to several times in the mid-teens, but not to Argentina (not sure why--a statement as to the government?). I imagine the countries he visited can be searched, but I do recall Brazil as one.but in all those 22 years he never went back to South America

Re: Pope Francis
With apologies to the the King and I-- I don't think any man has ever been as good a pope as he could have been. But this one tried. And with apologies to Dos Equis, I don't have a lot of love for the papacy--or any royal or authoritarian systems for that matter; but if we are to have a pope, I woul...
