Re: I must not understand people
Meade-- I doubt it had anything to do with fear that saying the word Christos You may be right; maybe in a time when everything was written by hand the use of some sort of abbreviations was common to save the writing labor. Or perhaps it had some sort of inclusiveness among the believers who would i...

Re: I must not understand people
Interesting; I did a quick check and it appeara that the general consensus now is the the "X" (Chi) is the first letter in the name/title of Jesus (Cristos) and was used as an abbreviation of the name for centuries.

Re: I must not understand people
There are all kinds of people; some are mentally ill, some are stupid, some are just plain lazy... and you are not going to change them. It' hard to understand why some would choose to drink (or take drugs or...) rather than care for what they have (be it their home or their family or...), but that'...
Re: Happy 4th
That makes sense. Or maybe they could bring back the specialist track to permit those who did the jobs well to progress in salary but not have to have the responsibility of leadership. It made sense before and could make a lot of sense now. there's no real reason to throw away the training just beca...
Re: Happy 4th
the idea that ground warfare is obsolete still hasn’t come true True, but ground warfare is more than a small arms infantry--it's skilled artillery soldiers, and armor, and even air defense artillery launched and maintained by highly trained and skilled men and women. This isn't 1776 where the farm...
Re: Happy 4th
Last president to raise taxes? probably Clinton when he gave us our last balanced budget. before him George ("read my lips") HW Bush, and we see what it did to him. But we want our politicians to give us something for nothing, and then we pretend to really believe they can. We are getting what we de...

Re: Legal question re Idaho murders
Perhaps, but that's not me; I doubt they loved the years or decade(s) in jail. Again, some people can adapt well to prison life, others cannot. and when your only realistic future is more of the same (no hope for minimum security or an honor farm, no chance of release), That "hope" is a mighty slim ...

Re: Legal question re Idaho murders
Do you seriously think that nobody has ever agreed to plead guilty for a life sentence in order to avoid the death penalty despite being actually innocent? Seriously? I imagine that has happened, but I really don't understand it. If you gave me my choice, I would elect a quick and painless (or mayb...

Re: New York state of mind
True, but we can and do elect assholes like Trump; I hope one day we mature beyond that tendency.

Re: New York state of mind
Sinners,as are we all. However, my point was that one does not have to be a man of faith to act morally. Other than Jimmy Carter who appeared to both proclaim and live his faith, I am not sure if any of them were "men of faith" or not. IMHO, I don't really think it matters, but I agree, some of thei...

Re: New York state of mind
While I won't judge the faith of any person (thankfully that's "not my job"), I agree that all fall short in this department. However, I do see two distinct groups among the "faithful", those who try to live according to the tenets of their faith and those who abandon those teachings whenever they f...

So do I, but it's kind of like saying would you rather eat shit or drink piss. I'd first choose neither.

Re: New York state of mind
there will be a revolution in this country by those of us who still believe in the Constitution. I trust that it won't come to that, and that the military (or a good portion of it) would not side with Trump and his minions if it did; but if they do, good luck with taking on the US military with all...

Re: Iran's request for talks
CP--I was never the most enthusiastic supporter of Obama and Biden, having significant differences with them in some areas (another thread), but they were aa big improvement on W's policies. Trump and his idiocy is in a class by itself, but it does not make W a statesman (or even desirable as a pres...

Re: New York state of mind
I'll condemn action, but won't ordinarily condemn individuals or groups of people for their beliefs. I might call them deluded, even stupid, but I save condemnation for actions, not beliefs.

Re: New York state of mind
Mamdani aside, the sad thing is the state of politics that would give us Cuomo (who had to resign as NY governor) and Sliwa (who faked his own kidnapping and lied many times over the years) as viable candidates. And then Adams who made his devil's deal with Trump is also running as an independent. I...

Re: New York state of mind
BSG--re Mamdani, I am concerned as to whether he can win a general election, even in NYC, and Curtis Sliwa as a mayor scares the hell out of me. I don't think he is an extremist, but his sound bites make it easy to try and characterize him as one (as the Cuomo campaign showed), and the general elect...

Re: New York state of mind
I think most of the people who come here don't come for freedom; they come for money. Perhaps, but then until your belly is full, the idea of democracy is an abstraction without any connection to reality. The poor come to the US for work, and then stay for the freedom. But I will concede that many ...
