Re: Enlgish is racisit
Maybe it could when speaking, but likely not in written papers. I've never seen ebonics in writing, but like the dialect Uncle Remus wrote in, if people do write in the dialect, it probably has a fairly limited audience and utility. One would think a college graduate from an university in an English...

Re: A letter to Brearley
After Trump, I would think anyone with a minimal amount of public speaking and performing (acting) skills could be elected president so long as (s)he was properly promoted. Voting for these people reminds me of a policy among many of us in high school to vote for the worst candidate for class presid...

Re: Senior moment or TIA?
I think it could be some form of muscle memory; I can recall a number of times in England where I entered a car park from the right hand (exit) lane, even though I was always conscious or driving on the left, making proper turns, entering circles (roundabouts) properly... It does happen, no need for...

Re: Kick it into touch...
If, as is threatened, players in this super league would not be eligible for national selection, the public will lose interest. Somehow, I seriously doubt that organizations like Fifa will bar some of the best players in the game from competition. They'll yell and scream how this is ruining competi...

Re: A letter to Brearley
Are you saying that kids celebrating entertainers and sports stars is limited to african american kids? There are plenty of white, latino, asian, etc. at their concerts/games, buying their merchandise, etc. Hell, when I was a kid and teen, I cannot think of a doctor, lawyer, or scientist I celebrated...

Re: My dad told us he loves us
My family sounds much like Gob's, but I think that's par for the course with Scandinavian culture (and my parents were first generation Americans). However, although we rarely said it, and were not very demonstrative, I do not think any of us doubted we were loved and loved each other. To say so, mi...

Re: A letter to Brearley
I agree; while some of our efforts to address the disparities are misguided, at best, it's plain silly to try and say that racism ended with the passage of the Civil Rights acts. There is a lot of systematic racism that must be addressed, but we cannot address it if we don't acknowledge it exists. A...

Re: I'm going to channel Denzel Washington and ask someone to explain it to me like I'm a two-year old
Sue--I wonder if the reason the attorney calls it a "crime" is because it must be tried to a jury; apparently MN tries all matters which can result in imprisonment before a jury (according to the MN Criminal rules I saw--unfortunately they were a PDF file which I could not copy and post, pretty much...

Only answer? No. Possible answer? Sure, experience has shown that. Likely answer? That assessment would depend on your experience. But face it, is there any no real excuse, let alone justification, for killing someone under these circumstances?

Re: I'm going to channel Denzel Washington and ask someone to explain it to me like I'm a two-year old
One would think a veteran police officer would understand that momentary panic the person might have when being arrested; I have worked on a number of DUIs and watched the dash cam records and most people start to panic when the cuffs are being applied. Most police canhandle it without shooting or t...

Well after reading those greatest hits (and I know it barely skims the surface), I clearly see how he made "Royal Family and the monarchy so that it remains an institution indisputably vital to the balance and happiness of our national life." Well, I don’t know, you might think it is silly, ...

@W--as I recall, he was of both Greek and Danish ancestry, but was born in Greece; his entire family was expelled from Greece after a military coup. I'm not sure where he grew up, but I do not think it was Denmark or Greece.

Gob--you can take what you want from them, but most, from the oracles of Oedipus, to the witches of Macbeth, to many others disclose similar supernatural "things" which are central to the disclosure of their their ideas.
