You can't make this stuff up
So ex-Speaker Hastert is going down (to coin a phrase) for disobeying banking regulations. In an attempt to spare him a spell in the nick, 40 of his closest friends wrote letters to the court. Among them was one Tom DeLay. He wrote, inter alia: “We held each other accountable and we studied God's wo...

Re: Prince is Dead?
Garrison Keillor did a nice tribute to Prince on today's PHC. I can take him or leave him (a bit like Prince in that respect) and sometimes Keillor just mails it in, but this seemed to be from the heart, probably because Prince was from, and stayed in, Minneapolis. It's probably on line at NPR.org.

Re: BoJo vs Barak
For those of you not familiar with Boris Johnson, I offer this. Full name Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson, he was born in New York and educated at Eton College. He was a journalist, but was fired for making stuff up. He is clearly intelligent and well read, and has spent years cultivating an affa...

Re: It's almost three months . . .
I love the idea of USCGC Monotony - I suspect autocorrect had a hand in that. Monomoy of course. (Interestingly my iPad suggests Monopoly.) And yes, if the plan was to hook up with the CG east of Farsi Island, whoever made that plan . . . Plenty of places to refuel on the way. I'd choose Jubail. Big...

It's almost three months . . .
. . since the Farsi Island incident, in which Iranian military temporarily delayed some US craft trying to find Bahrain. Obviously there are still some reasonable questions (even if I don't buy them) about the actions of the Iranians under international law. But we still do not know how they ended u...

I wondered when Das Boot would surface.
As far as Deity Jr. Is concerned, Econoline got it about eight posts ago. (Ducks in case I offended someone.)

Re: Even better than Reader's Digest canned books
Ok I am going to have to give some hints.
The one about the minor deity might have been better phrased as a junior deity. As in Jr.
Did the earth move for thee? Robert Jordan and the guerilla fighter Maria, during the Spanish Civil War.

Re: Even better than Reader's Digest canned books
Some for you to guess: Man's house goes up in flames, so he marries the governess. Nice-eyed sister stalks aristocrat, marries him. Native American man breaks window with plumbing fixture, runs away. Does not marry. Earth moves, several times. They don't marry. Man catches fish but does not successf...

Loved it. Saw it a couple of weeks ago. I remember Alan Bennett telling the story occasionally many years ago, while it was going on. And then he pops up in the final few minutes which was nice. Have to give it an A minus -- that one scene (you'll know the one I mean if you see it) lets it down.

Nancy Reagan has died
. . . And while I have no wish to speak ill of the dead, we will now have the disgusting sight of the remaining GOP candidates trying to outdo each other in the fealty they pay to her, and by extension Reagan's, memory.
