Re: Hell Freezes Over! -Flash-
Scooter--I recall the criticism about that (or a similar) study, and it basically said that those who suffered ill health effects normally associated with cigarette smoking were more likely to inflate the amount their spouse smoked than those who did not. This could be due both to an enhanced concer...

Re: Meat his display
I guess while most people happily eat meat, they don't want to be reminded where it comes from.

Actually oldr, there is no grey areas here at all. Intellectual copyright involves taking somebody's work, idea or vision and presenting it in a different context without express permission. A chef can easily be seen as an artist. They may well have created a dish with a vision in mind for it's pre...

Re: Faith killers
And we are generally so-obliged when it comes to an adult deciding for him or herself; but the courts have usually drawn the line when it comes to children presumed too young to make a responsible decision.

Re: Some Thoughtful Commentary on "Religion Versus Science"
And the science of eugenics led to mass sterilizations, the Nazis, and ultimately the holocaust in the quest to make the improved men. The science of "medicine" and "public health" led to the Tuskegee experiments, where men with syphilis were left untreated for years so it could be studied. The scie...

Re: Yet another gun study. By the nice people at UCSF.
Back to the OP; guns are definitely dangerous when handled incorrectly (or when what you plan to do with them is not thought out) as are chain saws and many other tools. However, when handled correctly they can clearly accomplish much, including protection of oneself and others (ask any police offic...

Re: oldr_n_wsr's alcoholic adventure
oldr--I know how you feel; I rarely get the time I want to ski, especially when my kids were younger. A number of years ago (about 15) a really good friend of mine died suddenly of a stroke. He was young and just became a father for the first time. I knew we had to be there for his wife and daughter...

Polemic writings have a place in college courses, and are important to aid students to develop critical thinking skills. This book just appears to be one of them. I don't see what the big deal is.

Re: Food porn crackdown
If someone buys something (in this case the meal), then it is theirs. It ceases to be the chefs as he sold it to the customer. If the customer wants a picture of his property, then he has that right. Not necessarily; if I sell you a book you cannot photocopy it; ditto for a sound recording. That's ...

Well Meade, that's where you and I differ; there's a big difference between putting/sending someone away and giving them a divorce where their rights and concerns are addressed and respected. Looking at your various definitions of the more original words, it can mean send away or dismiss from the ho...

To a certain extent I agree with CP; IMHO the point is the journey toward figuring "it" out. Information can be provided, but it is up to us to develop and understanding. We're not set up to fail, but set up to learn.

Re: God's plan
Gob--if there really is an infallible being, how many things could be labeled as black or white to him/her/it? And how easy would it be for him/her/it to explain the shades of gray to fallible beings who want right and wrong to be cast only as black or white?
