Re: The Oscars
The only Oscar pics I saw this year - both on line streaming - were Oppenheimer and The Holdovers. Both were good - a friend recommended The Holdovers to me and Da'Vine Joy Randolph who won 'Best Supporting Actress' did an excellent job. I have long been interested in the Manhattan Project so I watc...

Re: Navalny. Just sayin'
Yes, life is complicated. Navalny years ago was most famous for being part of the anti-immigration movement in Russia - maybe MRGA in a red hat - but he is yet another example of two wrongs not making a right. Just as I am capable at the same time of saying Hamas' action on Oct 7 were reprehensible ...

And there is a can of epistemological worms - and on that subject, most worms are hermaphrodites.

Re: Watching SOTU
From the Guardian's reporting: From the other side of the political spectrum, however, the gun control advocate Shannon Watts highlighted a darker side to Britt’s performance, as expressed in a particularly lurid passage. With wavering voice, the senator described meeting a migrant woman who she sai...

Re: Watching SOTU
Katie Britt giving the response from her kitchen - the message was either "I can't be bothered to move my ass somewhere more appropriate" or "this is where I believe a woman's place to be, first, last and always." Or maybe it was a bit of both. I didn't know that she was on the short list to be Tru...

Re: Watching SOTU
I'm financially better off than I was three years ago. I'm on SS which has gone up more or less with inflation. Gas is a very small part of my budget so it could double and I really would not care. My IRA rises pretty much with the stock market so it's doing well, thanks. I absolutely recognize that...

Re: Watching SOTU
I'm watching the Republican response. Apparently the Mexican coyotes rape their victims. Yes, and I am not denying that and the horror of it. But exactly how does Biden's border policy (thwarted of course by Trump) affect that. And 'prices are through the roof' - yes there has been inflation but for...

Still looking good. I think he has the right balance talking about Gaza. Even Mike Johnson stood up and clapped, instead of just looking as if he wishes he were not there.

He's right about insulin. One of my heroes when I was young and growing up in Canada, was Frederick Banting the Canadian doctor who discovered the link between diabetes and insulin. He sold the patent to the University of Toronto for $1 because he knew how it would be a lifesaver. Those who make it ...

Re: Watching SOTU
Biden is looking good. 30 minutes in he's had a couple of slight verbal misses but that's the way he has been for the last 40 years. Someone just shouted 'Liar!' or what sounded like it. I expect we will hear about it later.

CNN have a slight disconnect of sound and picture. I'm guessing the picture is 0.1 seconds ahead of the sound. I don't know if that is CNN's fault or whether they have some joint feed.

We evolved from fish. Fish are adept at changing their sex due to conditions, community needs etc. Some fish species change from M to F during their lives, some from F to M, and some go back and forth as the need arises. Most fish farming requires careful management of sex ratios by judicious applic...

Many moons ago I was an oceanography post graduate student in Southampton, England. We had a research aquarium. The queen came to the university to open some new building or whatever and she was shown our aquarium as part of the visit. (I wasn't there - this was a year or two before my time.). One t...

Re: Happy Presidents' Day Who is your favorite?
The head of State appoints the PM. HoS is currently the King but there are republican moves to get rid of the royals (I don't mean in an 'Up against the wall' sense) and replace the King with some sort of elected HoS like (say) Germany where Frank-Walter Steinmeier is President. Chancellor (Head of ...
