Re: US healthcare. Is this the reality?
Keep you going @W, or get you back on your feet? Hospitals usually provide care to those needing significant care for accute illnesses/injuries or accute manifestations of chronic illnesses. But I doubt they would give, say, a diabetic the drugs he needs to survie on a day to day basis, or would giv...

That's horrible Beaglz; I've never had a hospital ask about a copay (it was always billed). Doctor's offices always do, but never a hospital. And to dun someone while they are being examined for a potential heart attack is pretty indefensible.

dales--I'm sure there are some, although there are a lot of people of all races without insurance. and illegal or not, prudent public health policy would dictate that a health system should treat problems early to avoid complications and, esepcially, to prevent the spead of communicable diseases. I ...

I imagine she could seel to whomever she wanted in the US as well, but a licensed realtor/broker would not be permitted to be part of the transaction and to exclude people based on ethnicity/religion. And as Gb said, there's nothing to admire about her.

I can tell you that I served on the board of a noprofit clinic that served the uninsured (without regard to immigration status), and can attest we had many people coming in for problems which would not warrant emergency care, but still needed diagnosis and treatment. While I didn't work directly in ...

Sue--I'm not certain such a restriction would be upheld as it would still be overly broad. One can't restrict demonstrations at abortion clinics (so long as a buffer zone is present to permit access), nor can the demonstrators be restricted from approaching the women choosing to enter. I would think...

Re: Westboro goes to Court
ny attempt to regulate speech based on its content (and that is what we are trying to do here) however well intentioned (and it is certainly well intentioned here and is being proposed to spare the bereaved considerable emotional stress) makes me very nervous. When does a military (or other for that...

@W--from personal experience, coming from a large family of smokers, I can tell you that it appears COPD is not a certainty either. My grandmother was a 2-3 pack a day smoker who lived well into her 80s with no appreciable health problems, e.g., and my extended family has a lot of those. It may be t...

Re: Westboro goes to Court
I think there are ways that the speech could be regulated which would not amount to censorship of speech and ideas just because most of us consider them abhorrent, but I do think we have to be careful to set forth the regulations so censorship will neithe roccur nor be implied.

Gob--a PM is forthcoming. Gob and thestoat--perhaps i am a little over the top in criticism of him, but a lot of what I have seen and heard from (and read by) him seems to remind me a lot of the arrogant polemics of Michael Moore. I do recall seeing one part of a treatise where he was chastising a f...

Lo--politics crosses party lines, and expressing support for, or against, a war effort the country is involved in is inherently political IMHO. And these rituals are designed to engender such support in much the same way as saying "X thousands of people have been killed in this action, we owe it to ...

I stand corrected about the origin of the spaghetti monster, but I can swear i have heard Dawkins use it. But I disagree that it doesn't ridicule religion; the idea of worhsipping/believing in a spaghetti monster inspires lughter, which is what it is intended to do. One could use any number of model...

Gob--maybe if I get a chance I'll try again, but generally I just find him to be a passive aggressive intellectual lightweight who says "outrageous" things for attention. In this way I see him as much more akin to those whom he attacks than among philosophers or intellectuals, relgious or not, who t...

Dales--for those "hard decisions", don't you think two heads are better than one? and, FWIW< where in the bible does it say that men are to make the hard decisions? IMHO if a couple cares for and respects one another, making decisions jointly is a natrual progression.

and state congressional delegations are supposed to reflect their perrcentage of the nation's population as a whole. Guin--I plan to read them when I get a chance. and I am interested in your point about the film being faithful to the book--that is counter to what many of the critics have said (and the only negative press I've read on the film). Glad to hear that it's not necessarily the case. FWIW, I think Lisbet...

There is one quote I recall which says something like we shouldn't have to be so open minde...
