Re: An Eclipse.... woop dee doo!

In 20 years I'll be 86, so not inconceivable; I was visiting with my mom during the eclipse on Monday and she's 95. I saw the eclipse in 1970 (not total for me, but over 90% as I recall), so I won't feel deprived if I never see another. I have a cousin who actually travels the world to see total ecl...

Re: An Eclipse.... woop dee doo!

It was a mostly clear sunny day here in South Jersey until the moment the eclipse actually began, at which point, as if on cue, the clouds rolled in to obscure the entire event. We did notice a significant drop in temperature as the Sun was snuffed out though. I'll catch the next one, I guess. the t...

Re: Cigarette, Anyone?

BSG--Interesting, I have been in Pennsylvania, Virginia, South Carolina, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, and Nevada in the last couple of years and never noticed smoking in any bars or restaurants I frequented, so It doesn't seem to be all that widespread in those states. imagine there must be some plac...

Re: Cigarette, Anyone?

At the time I certainly didn't appreciate the moralizing smoke Nazis who felt they had to police my personal vices -- and I guess I still don't -- but as a public health & safety issue (as well as sanitation -- remember all the cigarette butts casually tossed on the ground?) I am now glad that virtu...

Re: Cigarette, Anyone?

I blame the Democrats for the years I spent smoking. I had tried cigarettes occasionally in my "tween" years, but really got going when I was a volunteer at the county Democratic Party office during the McGovern campaign in the summer and fall of 1972, at age 14. I spent a lot time there and menthol...

NJ earthquake

So we had a 4.8 event in NJ today, with the epicenter not far from BigRR's place. Certainly felt it here, about 60 or so miles away.

Re: Ignorance of the Law IS a Defense?

the singing of a provisional ballot certificate is not enough. When I covered cops & crime as a newswriter, I was always amazed at how many police reports said the investigating officer or victim would be singing the complaint. Truly, America's got talent. Since many people sign documents without r...

Re: Home for Random Thoughts

They're called 'roundabouts' (when they aren't being called 'damned nuisances' or worse by people who are still stuck in horse-and-buggy mode) in Wisconsin, and I'm seeing more and more of them. Here in NJ the state has been getting rid of them. The four major traffic circles between the Delaware R...

Re: Home for Random Thoughts

Who the fuck puts traffic lights on roundabouts?! That's just dumb. But there are a surprising number of people who have never encountered a roundabout (or "circle" as we call them here), so I guess they need all the help they can get. Parking sucks and I’m glad I don’t plan on moving my car til I ...

This is great and also (I think) very amusing: Beethoven's 5th, reduction for piano trio, with all-stars Manny Ax, Yo-Yo Ma and Leonidas Kavakos: RdSJYHjzV0s They've been doing a series of "Beethoven for Three" recordings that are really fun takes on works that are normally played by a 70 or 80-piec...

Re: My turn to get on the AI bandwagon...

Just for the heck of it, I copied "professional dancer (ballroom or ballet) dancing in front of a pile of televisions- in a way that it looks like the televisions are watching her" [changed it to professional ballet dancer] and this was created.... Looks like your AI got its televisions from 1986.

Re: The Judges Must Have Forgotten to Check Her Nether Regions....

A story about gender identity in the very young: Like many children, when my son was about 3 or 4 he developed a tremendous interest in dinosaurs. He amassed a very large collection of dinosaur figurines, could identify them all by species and era, and could tell you all kinds of facts about each on...
