what do you think?
what would you guys think of inviting a young person here to provide a new perspective?
I realize that there is adult content here but , quite honestly, there are things on network tv that are far worse and far less intelligent and important than the issues discussed here.
I am talking about my daughter. she seems to be much like me. she has interest in affairs of govt and interest in world affairs as well. I don t know that she would even be interested but she sure likes to read over my shoulder.
I would be restricted more than anyone, I think, but who knows, maybe considering a young person would actually be beneficial to us.

Re: what do you think?
Ditto what CP said.
If she's interested, she's welcome to join; if she wants to post, fine; if she just wants to lurk for a while, fine; if she loses interest and wants to leave, fine; and if she wants to leave and come back later, that's fine too.
(And if she manages to teach you some typing/computer/internet skills, that would be a big bonus!
)

she is 13, and when I say that she is like me I mean that she is smart, beautiful, surly, pigheaded, curious, and very nice, mostly.
Re: what do you think?
You have to make your own parenting decisions, but I think 13 is too young for the content of this site. Not intellectually, necessarily, but definitely emotionally (although yes, we can question the emotion age of many who post here
).

Re: what do you think?
Go ahead and invite her. I know when I was 13 yrs old the thing I enjoyed most was hanging around old people who were arguing with each other about politics and discussing other things that old farts like to talk about.
At the age of 13 I especially liked it when old people talked about how things were when they were kids and how athletic they were then and are now (for example, they can now walk a mile in 30 minutes). Also, when they talked about operations they'd had and pains they experience every day I was overwhelmed with interest.

Joe, you forgot the discussions of bodily waste functionality

I can't believe you are serious. It would be seriously poor parenting and judgement.

well, guin, I will certainly make my own parenting decisions, along with holly, but your response rings true to me. I m not sure that she is ready for the viciousness of a very few posters here.
intellectually she is ready for the subjects discussed here, I think, in fact she wants to know everything about everything.....

Re: what do you think?
I don't think it would be fair on the others here. Most would be kind enough to alter their normal posting behaviour to accommodate her, which stifles things.

Gee whiz wes, wouldn't you prefer that your 13 year old daughter retain at least a some respect for adults a little longer, rather than start reading the exchanges here and lose every single bit of it?

Re: what do you think?
Hm. 13 was a little bit younger than I was thinking of when I answered before.
Still, It's up to you, Wes, and her...especially her. The fact remains that we don't have any actual age restrictions here; it's also possible for anyone to come here and read what's been written in order to get a feel for the atmosphere without registering or getting the ability to post. As for Gob's point...I don't think anyone here should expect anyone else here to alter their posting behavior (though it's always better to play nice regardless the age of one's playmates), so you should take that into consideration whatever you decide.

I will not change my posting "tone" just for some young'un. I will be as mean and nasty as I always am.

Re: what do you think?
well, I just let her read this thread.....
