My American chums will love this

Post by Gob »

As you probably know, me and her indoors are going back to Blighty in November.

This one of our (in)famous extended breaks, what with us being away from 3rd November to 17 December.

Of course we had to take 4 days off to get ready to travel, and a week off after to get over the holiday, so it really extends from 31/10/15 to 23/12/15, a total of 8 weeks.

But then Hen decided that, as we'd be starting back on 23/12/15, she may as well take an extra day, and add it into her Xmas period leave.

So she doesn't go back until 4/1/16. But that's my B'day, so I'll get her to take that and the next day off too.

So that's a return for her on 6/1/16 or 9 1/2 weeks, (ominous!)

(Poor old me is working through Xmas and new Year!)

Fortunately for Hen she's built up 5 weeks of flex time, so she won't be taking too big a chunk out of the 3 months leave she's built up, and will probably take a month of that in cash.

Edited; as Joe is a clever fucker...

Does Australia have 31 days in September?

Doesn't every one?

Bugger, I'll just alter that ...

I am totally living in the wrong country. All that time off PLUS 31 days in September! How do they manage? (I guess with everyone off work no one notices an extra day here or there.)
GAH!

Just got a mail from Hen....
I currently have 26 days flex. This is increasing daily.

Our UK trip is going to take 39 days for me.

I have 3 months and 4 days rec. leave.

I will take 30 flex, nine days rec and get paid out 6 weeks.

Woot!!

You two better not ever retire. You would never get the amount of time to go on holiday that you get now.

The flex time is great BUT to get that it means she is working significant overtime. On a day to day basis what kind of quality of life is that really?

That's a lot of stress.

Tell me about it. Hen gets into work around 8.00 am most days, and doesn't leave until 6.30 pm - 7.00 pm.

How long does she plan to keep that up? I seem to recall her having some blood pressure issues at one time, passing out or some such.

It's all well and good if your health holds, which I hope hers does. Is she retiring earlyish?

Thanks for the concern. Hen turns 52 this week, still hits the gym 4+ times a week, (mix of aerobic and weights exercise,) and is fit and healthy at the mo.

We're looking to retire, at the latest, in 4 1/2 years time.

Bugger, just did some calculations, and I'll only have 3 1/2 weeks of leave left to use when we come back from the UK!

All fabulous news. Will you grey nomad Oz or back to Cornwall for a time?

@hub just hit retirement age but has so far refused to do so.

On the other hand, don't wait any longer than you have to. The husband of a friend, incredibly fit and athletic, early 60s, just dropped dead during a hike in the mountains this weekend. They hiked the Grand Canyon together every year, did long (100 mile) bike rides, were active and involved. And boom, on a trail, out in the wild, and he's gone. :( You just never know. The same thing happened another friend's father, and he was even younger -- out running, had just retired, collapsed on the sidewalk. But staying as fit and healthy as possible is a great thing.

Plan is to take a year, and travel the circumference of Aus in a campervan, before moving back to the UK for retirement.

I cannot imagine working a day longer than I have to after hitting retirement age (60 for me.)

Ouch! Not a nice thought, and that is how we are thinking. Condolences.

(Mind you, if Hen croaks, I'm a millionaire, on the back of her superannuation payout!)
