CSB Reboot

For anyone here who's interested, (I just thought I would post this for those of you who now rarely post at the CSB in it's current wretched condition or not at all)

The long awaited new and improved CSB Reboot is due to be rolled out in the next few weeks.

Garaelb has posted a poll question in what has become a sureally amusing thread, (thanks to the lovely and talented Quaddriver...if you want to see some real thigh slappers, read through a few pages after the first few posts ) in "News and Suggestions"... the thread is: "Official Update on CSB:Reboot" ..

The Poll Question is:

Who wants to be automatically pre-registered on CSB:Reboot?

I do
I don't

I asked Gar who would vote no, ( the registration system, based on what he said in another post apparently involves a 12 hour delay...) and explained that he understood nobody would do that; he wants to basically get a head count of who wants to be pre-registered...

So if you have any interest in checking out the new forum, and you'd like to be pre-registered, I would suggest that you might drop by and cast your vote.

Just thought I would pass that along....

Nah... I requested deletion of my membership the other day after learning from Gar that moderation and banning would be a possibility on the new version.

Tis not the CSB anymore...

I hadn't thought of it that way Sean. Fair point.

For 10 years I have said that the day that moderation and banning were introduced would be the day I left...

Cor, look at me! Man of my word and all that! :D

What really matters to me on those scores is how it's implemented...

In a post today Gar seemed to be saying that he was talking about prohibiting making threats not mere name calling...

I'm going to check it out and take a wait and see attitude....

I'll tell you this....

If all that happens that the current "MOTU" conspiracy cranks that dominate the existing board wind up on a new board with alot more toys...

Gar will have blown a lot of coin....

Unless he wants to convert it into a crackpot oriented forum, and tries work out linking and advertising arrangements with the kookaboo blogs...

Given the forum rooms he's announced that doesn't appear to be the current plan any way...

He better find a way to bring in enough diversity, somehow, that that crap becomes a marginal side show rather than the center ring of the circus...

Or no well rounded person with multiple interests will have any interest in the place.

Can't get into the CSB at work any more. Not been on it in months, may have a gander tomorrow night.

I've checked in @ the CSB periodically, but haven't posted. I'll most likely register, and see how the new board behaves (or misbehaves!)

I voted not to be pre-registered. I am thinking that I will check it out but if it is the same old circus fergetaboutit. This place is safe from having the circus come to town so I will likely just stick with this.

From what I read over there, sounds like Gar is thinking of charging money for pre-registrations.

As I posted at the CSB, whether I continue to frequent the site or not, I do ahve some vested interest in retaining control over my "handle" due to the decade plus of posts associated with it. *Thats* why I would want to pre-register -- particularly since Gar says he is going on line over Thanksgiving when I'll be too busy with friends and family to pay attention to CSB.

As for pre-payment, I'm not sure that is where he is headed, but he does intend to convert the site into a profit-making venture, so I wouldn't be surprised.

Like someone would pay a fee to be part of that? I don't think that's a model that's gonna work.

However, it's obviously a tremendous opportunity for some highly targeted direct-to-consumer marketing by the manufacturers of Seroquel, Zyprexa and other anti-psychotic meds.

Actually I get the feeling he is looking to have this "major" website that has computer conferensing, live camera phoning, facebook/you tube type stuff that is either payed for directly (conferencing camera phoning) and the BB is just part of that. He did say that (paraphrasing here) that if enough people sign up for pre-reg he would consider doing it (as it take time and is not automatic) and that lazy people would like to pre-reg and lazy people would spend the money. Somewhere in the threads about the board reboot (3 or 4 on Board New) he mentioned it.

I cannot believe any money making venture, with our membership as in initial intake, would be of great interest to anyone else.

Apparently it was, which is what gave him this crazy idea. :)

Of course, I'm very modest about my contribution to that. :D

I don't want to pre-register without knowing exactly what I'm pre-registering for. The terms and conditions seem interesting, and if there are fees etc, then a pre-registration may have effectively already agreed to the terms before the terms are set in concrete. That doesn't seem the usual way to do things. I'd like the opportunity to register a possible interest, but I don't want to blindly join until all the terms, conditions and costs have been clearly set out.

Jeeeeeeeeeezus!

Just been over to CSB, Steve's gone even deeper into meltdown.

*le sigh*

I may delve further later on, if I can stomach it.

What leads you to that conclusion, oldr? Is it something in the proposed TOS? (I haven't looked through that yet; I'm planning to go through it over the weekend)

From what I have read, I get the impression that Gar may be planning to charge a fee for access to some of the more advanced features, (like the video conferencing) which seems perfectly fair to me....

But on the other hand, if he were to think he could charge people for just basic forum membership, that would truly be madness. Who in their right mind would pay for the "privilege" of dealing with the dishonest trolling antics of Gwen, Steve, editec and Quad? :shrug :loon  It would be like telling people that for a fee, you'll have someone fart in their face or hit them in the head with a hammer....Sounds like a tough sell to me...

Hell, in all fairness Gar should be paying people to put up with them....

I really believe (and hope) that you must have the wrong end of the stick on that one, oldr.....

The fact is, that for Gar's enterprise to have any hope of success he desperately needs to attract more participants; not throw up discouraging road blocks....

If he thinks he can charge people for getting to deal with Team Troll, he might as well have taken all the money he spent and piled it up in the street and set it on fire....
