More Awful News

Post by Lord Jim »

I just received word that Andrew passed away this past April.....

Here's a link to an obit his wife Rebecca put up:

You can leave a condolence message if you care to.

I also understand that Rebecca is happy to hear from Andrew's on-line friends, and asked that the word be put out to them. (I met her at a FtF in SF a few years ago; Kristina will probably remember it.)

Ah. AGD. He was missed long before he was gone and now, more so. Too young. Glad I'm out of my 50s - seems to have become a dangerous decade.

Thanks LJ, I guess. The odd thing is, when you don't know what happened to people, somehow they are still alive even when that's no longer true on earth. To me, it explains something about the aftermath of airplanes vanishing. A friend is a person who is possible.

geez, I had finally gotten dying out of my head, after my long winter last year.

now that it seems that I am not dead after all, I had better start thinking about dying again in order to avoid it.

I need to get my sorry ass to a doctor, I m gonna miss the open enrollment for medicare again, it seems. I have the regular medicare, but I was really sick when it came thru, and didn t file all the part a, b, c, and d stuff, so I have never used it. the fee comes out of my SS every month, so I guessthat I should take care ofit just to get the subsidy I m probably entitled to and get a few bucks back in my pocket. I m just deficient in certain traits that are necessary in today s world.

I m more the wilderness homesteader type

red tape and dealing with it just is something that I am unable to handle on my own.

sorry to vent in Andrews thread.

Oh no, I am crushed but not surprised. Andrew was one of the smartest people I've ever met, with one of the most agile brains I have ever had the pleasure of observing and interacting with.

Somewhere in an old box of memories I have a postcard of a bloom of flowers in Death Valley he sent me during a trip there. I will treasure it even more now that he is gone.

Andrew's death is truly the world's loss: a brilliant mind now gone silent. Even when we disagreed, it was a delight to engage with him and I am thankful to have had the opportunity to "know" him, such as one can, through this series of tubes. I can give him no higher honorific than to call him my teacher, as I learned so much from him over the years, and I will honor his memory by trying to match his clarity and courage. AGD will be well and truly missed.

This is sad indeed; I always appreciated engaging in discussions with Andrew and, like Sue, I learned a great deal from him. RIP.

I remember him well, and am very sad to hear he's gone.

After the FtF (at Park Chow in SF with Lord Jim, BobB and SWMbI, and I can't remember who else), Andrew and his wife walked back to the house with me and the Spousal Unit, and the four of us continued to sample assorted fermented and distilled fruit and vegetable juices for quite some time...

It wasn't so long ago that Andrew and his wife invited Loca and myself to dinner.

He was an excellent host and a good conversationalist.

Hope to see you on the flip side.....AGD.

Your collective inability to acknowledge this obvious truth makes you all look like fools.

I've hesitated to post about this, because it left me a bit of a wreck yesterday.

It's no secret Andrew and I had our differences on the board at the start and a few more times over the years, but we also communicated off-board numerous times - and there I got to know that despite how harsh he could be on the board, he was a wonderful person with a kind heart, and he provided me a lot of guidance in making professional choices and life choices over the years.

I looked up to him a lot because he's one of the smartest people I've ever known and it hurt when I felt I'd disappointed him (which caused me to be reactionary). Anyway, I hope he saw my last posts about all that (that he was right about prosecutors) before he died. If he didn't, he's in Heaven (according to his belief) and he knows it now, so we're all good.

Gone far too soon, and a truly great loss. RIP, Andrew D
