I checked again with Ray's daughter. She gave me permission to quote her response:
Hi. He’s ok. He was going to go to a rehab type facility then ended up with a high white blood count and it came back as an infection in his blood. He’s back on antibiotics and on the ventilator fully to try and rest and heal.

Thanks for the update, I’ve been worried. Hoping he’ll pull through this.

We've all been worried. When I saw there was a new post, I felt a twinge of apprehension. I'm so happy it was not terrible news.

Glad it's not bad news, hoping for a full recovery.

Hang in there, Ray!

I just heard from Ray's daughter that he passed away yesterday morning. I will forward more news when I get any.

RIP, RayThom.

I'll be talking to someone about perhaps arranging a 'prisoner trade', of sorts.  Maybe we can cut a deal where God agrees to do a 'three-fer' — he takes the Chief Cheeto, his equally-witless son, and that piss-poor excuse for a Postmaster General, and lets us have Ray back.

That is very sad news. Although I knew he was fighting a very difficult battle, I really thought RayThom would get through this round.

I stayed silent because I was quite certain he would not make it. It is sad the he, as with so many others, are put through end of life torture. Patient families are often guilt tripped into putting their loved ones through all manner of torture disguised as treatment. I have grown to loathe oncologists who will urge people to try treatments that may buy the slightest bit of time but no quality at all. I have had 2 personal encounters with this of late and one family member just finished his last round of chemo. He is a sick and miserable mess and will now be going on hospice. All that chemo brought him nothing but being quite a bit more ill than cancer alone would have. He now wishes that he had not listened to the oncologist, but instead had listened to his longtime family MD who told him not to do it. (I kept MUM about it which was hard to do.)

I am sorry Ray that this was your endgame.

Dang. His avatar finally got him. He had COPD for years. I think he always had a rather fatalistic attitude about it.

I tend to agree with TPFKA@W, and hope I have the courage to continue to agree when Mrs Mc's or my time is near.

Another voice silenced. It's slowly getting quiet around here.

RayT is sorely missed and will be so always.

Pneumonitis and opportunistic infection - a double whammy in the midst of the rigors of chemotherapy. That’s what people are talking about when they say the cure will kill you if the cancer doesn’t.

I talked with Ray via private message a fair bit about his prognosis and treatment; he knew the former was bleak and the latter at best might give him a little more time. His daughter really wanted him to get treatment and it meant a lot to him to give her that hope.

RIP, RayThom. You were one of the good ones, and a world where folks like you and LJ are gone and folks like you-know-who are still around is just a very sad world, indeed.

This. Exactly this.

I can't say it any better, so I won't try; I have nothing to add except my condolences to Ray's wonderful, loving, and very much loved daughter. I hope his last thoughts and his last breaths were peaceful.

2020 suckage.

Can it get any worse?

We've lost two wonderful posters this year.
