Why Recruit?

You are the one to bring up this subject, BSG. I happen to agree with doing this, and I’m doing my part. What are you doing?
One of the ripe areas for increasing cordial talk is the “Members” list option at the bottom of the page. When I look on that couple of pages there are many people I’d like to talk to again. Apparently, they were members once, but seem to be inactive now. I hope they have not all passed away.
For the record I have been a member of the Car Talk site and many of its following sites since their earliest days, when the Magliozzi brothers started all of this. I feel entitled to be treated as a non-Newbie here, and not subjected to the Clamor of the Harpists.
I called an old friend on the list, someone who has belonged to many of the same sites. I asked if he became inactive after he was abused. He said no, it is because he is just too busy now, and would rather spend his limited free time on other subjects.
I will try others on the list. I hope others of you do the same.

And therein lies the problem. You believe that being a "non-Newbie" conveys some sort of "status" that "entitle(s)" the bearer to some enhanced level of consideration of their contributions, and that it is because you are not seen as a "non-Newbie" that others have given your ideas short shrift.

The fact is that "non-Newbies" are not "entitled" to any such consideration, and no one cares about what you have to say because you've done nothing but act like a complete jackass from the moment you got here.

I wouldn't go quite that far, Scooter, but he did seem to come in here with the attitude that "You need someone to save this board and I'm the only one who can do it for you", which I'm certain rubbed several people here the wrong way — myself included.  However, I was willing (and still am willing) to give him the benefit of the doubt to see if he'd become part of the tasty stew we have here already, or if he'd be the road-killed skunk that someone threw into the pot that spoils the whole damned thing.

Why the heck am I being targeted for your wrath Meth? The only thing I said was that obviously recruitment hasn’t been prioritized, I neither endorsed nor criticized that approach, just stated the fact.

So kindly stop. I’m up to my ears in bullies here as it is and considering the conditions of life we are currently living, I’m not able to tolerate anymore, thank you.

I'm fine with more people joining and think it could be a good thing.

I also think someone new coming along and analyzing how the board is run and categorizing its members is unnecessary and not helpful in any way. If people want in now, they can follow Methuselah's earlier directions. If any of us want to recruit others, we can help them individually. I helped wesw sign up - remember?

Okay, maybe that wasn't the best example I could have used to convince others to be interested in recruiting...

(but I also got RayThom to join)

That's my 2 cents....

As of now 34 posts made up of: 1 here I am; 31 with unsolicited advice to make the board better with more than a few insults thrown in; and 2 short substantive posts. If you want to participate, participate. If you want a different board go build it.

BSG, I didn't intend to bully you, or treat you with wrath. I was trying to give you credit for bringing up the topic of recruitment. One of the effects of coming back after being away for a long time is that one forgets all of the sins he's committed earlier. Some of you have added details on that, people that I thought were friends. One of the few benefits of growing older is you forget your past sins. I'll try to be more humble, but it isn't easy. Rubato, look at your Personal Messages.

Rube hasn't been seen for over a month. Course, he could be lurking.

I remember reading on another board on which Rube participated that he had eyesight issues. May have made posting difficult.

Thanks, TPFKA. Do you have an alternate way to tell him that he has a PM here?

I thought you were supposed to stop once you needed glasses.

Speaking of glasses, I went to get a new pair to make reading newspapers more pleasant, and I was told I should go for a cataract exam first. I was terrified when my wife was first informed us that she needed that exam several years ago, but the operation was a minor bump in her life. We found out during this that many of our relatives had already had the operation, and many of our acquaintances. It is a fairly common problem as you age. The worst side-effect is that you shouldn't drive for several weeks after the exam. I'm writing all this down to keep myself calm. I just don't like people cutting on my eyes.

I got the impression that they it was far more serious than simply needing glasses. Maybe macular degeneration wet, dry- something of that nature.

My mother suffered from that in the last decade or so of her life. Trust me, I wouldn't wish it on anyone.
Not even Dumb'old Trump.

I want to point out that I am only expressing a poor memory of something I read a long while ago and may have it all wrong.

I remember rubato mentioning something about a problem with his eyes over at Le Chat House but I don't remember anything specific. I didn't go to that website very often so I don't know if he wrote more about it. I never read anything about it here at Plan B. He very likely preferred to keep the subject among people who were nicer to him than we are.

I just did a Google Search for Le Chat House, and couldn't find anything. Are they gone for good?

He may have been unwise to leave them open for so long.
