Should unlimited editing be restored?

The reason for curtailing unlimited editing was explained
here. While the decision to do so was made with a specific case in mind, it is not out of the realm of possibility that future circumstances would lead to wanting to prevent someone from a wholesale editing or deletion of previous posts. However, at least one poster has indicated that the edit limit does not afford sufficient time to perform all of the edits that may be desired. It does not appear that creating a limit of a longer duration is possible; it is either one week or unlimited editing.
Please indicate your preference for either unlimited editing or an editing limit of 1 week. I have toggled the option for allowing changes to one's vote in the event that discussion on the topic leads someone to change their mind.

The way the poll is worded, I can honestly say I don't care one way or the other.
I personally wouldn't really care if there were no time limit on editing, though once Jim explained the reason for implementing the one-week limit I can see how that was justified under the circumstances. At the CSB the sudden lack of an edit function, and then after the ensuing uproar the the arbitrary and capricious decision to make the limit what? 30 minutes? 60 minutes? (I forget which) was totally unacceptable...but as long as the limit is at least 24-48 hours, I can deal with it.
I don't care if there's no limit, but if there's got to be one, a week is fine by me.

There is a very good reason for the present limit. To ask for it to be lifted right now and compromise the ongoing investigation just so one can fix ancient typos is just too precious for words and amazingly self-centred.

First I would like to apologise if my posts on this matter made it seem like I thought it was some kind of issue.
I do not.
I am in full agreement with Econo & Sue.

I am in full agreement with 100% of the persons who vote "one week"
Meade
But I think it's a shame that a change in sig line backdates itself to the beginning of time

One week sounds fine (even a little too long IMHO). If you can't get your post right in one weeks time, well then I think there are other problems. And one can always put another post explaining the previous posts errors and/or edits.

Well, if Admin wants to be my spelling-bee-otch, no worries.

Just copy and paste your words into a word document and save it for your later publishing.
Neither Admin, or Plan B, is your publisher.

So let's see where we are.
Someone makes an issue out of the curtailing of unlimited editing and why the membership wasn't consulted, and demands answers. Someone else provides a forum where the membership can be consulted and where those answers can be found, so that the issue can be brought to some resolution, and that someone makes no effort to meaningfully participate.
Why does this sound so famiiar...
I am using my psychic powers to predict that very soon another poll will be started, and unlike a previous one, it won't use terms like "suspension" and "probation". It's language will be much more final. And it will be overwhelmingly approved. And a boil on the butt of this forum will be lanced permanently.

1 week is fine if you want to limit it.
Unlimited is fine too.
The few who will go back and edit a post dishonestly will simply employ their creative efforts differently to get around it to the same end. And they will be the same people, no matter what.

Regardless of the time limit, if any, on editing, any edited posting should automatically and ineradicably show the date and time of the editing.

It already does Andrew, as long as there has been another post made after the one being edited.
In my ideal forum any edited text in a post would also be shown automatically in red.

Thanks,

In my opinion, any posting which has been edited should automatically and ineradicably show the date and time of the editing regardless of whether there has been another posting.

Unfortunately I believe that to be something over which the admins of individual boards do not have any control.

You're online, go to google and type "
DICTIONARY" (or cut and paste the BOLDED word in case you have trouble spelling "DICTIONARY") and all words with their correct spelling are yours.
ETA
edited to add this just because I could still edit.

An honest poster can always add; "I edited this due to........" if they wish. Many posters already add "ETA".

They can indeed... as long as they are an honest poster. They are not the ones to look out for.
I've got it! All it takes is for Admin to be on here 24/7 constantly re-reading every post on the board and noting any changes. The changes could then be posted into their own thread which the rest of us can peruse at our leisure. Easy peasy.
What do you think Strop? You up for that?
