Meat his display

Post by Gob »

A butcher who stopped displaying dead animals in his window due to complaints they were upsetting children says the public can decide whether the displays should return.

JBS Family Butchers in Sudbury, Suffolk, stopped displaying the carcasses after people threatened to boycott nearby shops.

Some shoppers said the sight of the animals was "disgusting".

The business said it was now asking for people's thoughts on the matter.

Assistant manager Richard Nicholson, 25, said the shop, which is in the Borehamgate shopping centre, had displayed the animals in the window for "years".

The produce on display was changed daily and all of it was for sale, he said.

But two weeks ago a letter was published in the Suffolk Free Press from Daniel Cudmord, who said he bred rabbits but was shocked by the contents of the window display, which he said included "continental giant rabbits, pig heads and ducks".

"I do not know how it can get away with it and it must be upsetting for children who have animals," he said.

Last Thursday, a second letter was published from Ben Mowles saying the produce was a "needless display of multiple mutilated carcasses".

"I used to take my 12-year-old daughter to Marimba sweet shop but now we avoid the entire precinct as we'd rather not look at bloody severed pigs' heads when buying sweets," he said.

He added there was a "growing number of local residents boycotting all shops in the Borehamgate centre".

I guess while most people happily eat meat, they don't want to be reminded where it comes from.

That's not unusual to see in Chinatown. I've been to the one in Oakland and San Francisco and they both have displays like that, although I don't remember seeing rabbits. I do remember seeing snakes.

MMMmmm ... tasty stuff... makes me hungry for some pork with a side of snake blood and chicken feet.

Chicken feet dim sum is a delicacy. Duck too, IIR.

Very efficient people, the Chinese, don't let food go to waste.

I like the shop window with the goods in it. Keeping it real is a good thing.

I blame Peppa Pig and Shaun the Sheep. The anthropomorphising of animals has bred a generation of little soft arses.

Back in the 70's we regularly watched and helped our grandparents to make brawn from pigs heads and got wild rabbit from the groundsman at the park with heads and feet still in place. We had chickens from gramps little flock of dual purpose birds, pulling the tendons in chicken feet to gross out the other kids was always fun.

We knew where the food on our plate came from and that meat came from animals. Seems that children today don't have that connection any more.

A butcher who was pressured to remove animal carcasses from his shop window has reinstated his display after a huge show of support from the general public.

JBS Family Butchers in Sudbury, Suffolk, say they were forced to take down the display of rabbits, pigs and poultry after people threatened to stop using other nearby shops.

But today staff put the animals back on display after a deluge of support from all over the world.
