batten down the hatches guin!
Re: batten down the hatches guin!
Wes, I read it all the first time. It does not say the Sound froze all the way to the mainland.

well that a little different than your earlier comments....
Re: batten down the hatches guin!
No it's not. Please Wes, read.

Wes, read your article. The Sound didn't freeze, just some of the harbors on the Vineyard, which is not unheard of.
completely refuted by the article

Re: batten down the hatches guin!
oh and I found references to freezing all the way to the mainland, and even of houses being dragged to the mainland by draft horses, but I tire of this.
Re: batten down the hatches guin!
Wes, the sound did not freeze over so that you could walk on it from the mainland to the Vineyard. That's my only point. Your article confirms what I said that the old timers were pulling your leg. Stop moving the fucking ball and pay attention to the point that you originally raised.

We've had hte Great South Bay freeze over a few times. Not a normal occurance. Need about a month of sub 15degree days for that to happen.
Even then, it's not the whole thing that freezes over. Near the inlets never freezes over.
The lakes in Pa are frozen. All I need now is about 10" of snow and I'll be riding.

the Chesapeake froze in 76/77. they closed schools because it was so cold and we couldn t get heating oil, because the tankers couldn t get thru the bay. if I remember correctly there were 30 days where the temp never got over 32 degrees.
I remember seeing the Wicomico river completely frozen and huge ice mounds made it look like the arctic ocean

I recall working with an older guy in the mid 70s (he might have been well into his 80s) who talked about when Boston harbor froze and he and his friends rode bikes out to the edge of the ice pack and were out of the sight of land (although this might well have been an optical illusion since I imagine it would be hard to ride your bike very far on an ice sheet, especially for young kids). If I'm right, he said this was around 1906 or so.

The Chesapeake, having w lower salt content than Boston Harbor or Nantucket Sound, will freeze more easily. It still takes a lot of deep deep cold - those water bodies hold on to the last little bit of "heat" with all their strength.

Lake Erie freezes. And some old timers from oh.... the 1980s have been known to walk almost to C eh N eh D eh. It's fairly routine for some Darwin candidate to ride a snowmobile across and some don't make it all the way. Mind you, I remember a time when Lake Itchygooley froze and the tankers couldn't get through to my school so we didn't have any oil because we never thought of having it delivered by trucks from a refinery. It must be true because I wrote it on the internet. Just now. See?
