Always chew your food

Post by Gob »

A father of three choked to death as he tried to eat a McDonald's cheeseburger in one mouthful, an inquest has heard.

Darren Bray, 29, of Barry, Vale of Glamorgan, blacked out as he ate the 99p burger following a night out with friends in October 2015.

Cardiff Coroner's Court heard Mr Bray, who had been drinking, but not enough to affect his judgement, died from a blockage to his airway.

A death by misadventure conclusion was recorded.

The hearing was told Mr Bray said "watch this" to his friends as he squashed the burger in half and put it in his mouth.

Friend Sam Bisgrove said: "I could see him trying to cough it up and he was making horrible coughing noises.

"I tried to hit his back to help him clear his airway."

Paramedics arrived and performed CPR on Mr Bray, who was at a friend's house in Barry, but were unable to restart his heart and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Dr Rhiannon Trefor told the hearing there was an 8cm by 5cm (3in by 1.9in) ball of food stuck in his throat.

"He would not have been able to breathe... with that in his airway," she said.
“If you trust in yourself, and believe in your dreams, and follow your star. . . you'll still get beaten by people who spent their time working hard and learning things and weren't so lazy.”

That's debatable.

HEY, WATCH THIS!

Your collective inability to acknowledge this obvious truth makes you all look like fools.

In other words, he was a danger to himself even when he was sober...

They've never heard of the Heimlich maneuver in Vale of Glamorgan? With friends like that, you don't need any enemies.

That's awful. 8-)

He may not have been born a stupid idiot, but he clearly died as one.

In a case like that you ,try to dig it out (panic ,and the squeamish factor ,I suppose - we will never know ,we werent there )one of my acquaintances chastised me when I said I would attempt to save someones life with techniques I probably wasnt well versed in .I suppose you could stand by and let someone die ,my Mother is usually incapable of calling 911 when a crises occurs ,panic I suppose .

About the finger airway clearing technique ,I saw my Dad do it more then once .when one of us boys (6 boys in all ,no girls in my family ) would get choked .The young ones would usually get choked on a hot dog or a round piece of candy . a wad of bread and the rest of a fast food meal would be hard to extricate ,I would imagine , (that stuff seems to turn into a lump in your stomach anyhow )

I was torn between writing, "Not much gets past you, rube!"
and
"That's a pretty good joke, rube!" (a. McD's customers don't chew; b. McD's and 'food' may be an oxymoron).

So there's both - just in case. :|
