swamp people has many things in common with deadlieast catch, but it is also anthropological in its own way.

it has family tradition and history and humor. this season will concentrate more on the traditions and families and the interrelation and integration and community and less on the man and beast combat of alligator hunting.

with rules and honor and competition and all that....

rugged individualism mixed with strong family ties and ALLIGATORS!!!!

Gob--The US version of Masterchef (and I presume My Kitchen Rules) are more game shows than pseudo-documentaries.

I agree, so are the Aussie versions, which means I watch even less reality TV!

I'll admit to having watched Fear Factor, a game show that pitted contestants doing professionally rigged stunts (like bungee jumping off a building) with ones that tapped into fears (like being locked in a box with hundreds of (nonvenomous) snakes, and ones that were pretty disgusting (like eating a pint of rancid fish guts). It was a game, but one that tried to attract the most asinine contestants (maybe it's theme did that as well, but these were the worst of the worst); it was hard to tell if they were being deliberately idiotic r if they were actually that way, but I leant to the former.

Again, I don't see it as a reality show, as there was nothing real about it.

But some of the documentary style shows have turned into modern-day freak shows--ones which present people solely so the viewers can ridicule them. And because it's a TV show, some people don't feel any worse about making fun of a real person depicted than they do of a character in a scripted drama. That's what I think Michael Moore does in a lot of his films as well; giving the audience leave to make fun of the people he is ridiculing without feeling bad about hurting a fellow human being's feelings. these aren't fellow human beings, they're characters on TV. And IMHO that's pretty disgusting.

I completely agree, RR.
I think that Survivor is a horrible example of the worst of humanity. backstabbing and manipulative.

Swamp People is the exact opposite.

there is competition but also huge community and family themes. also themes of diversity within unity.

plus there are 12 ft gators!!!

Wha t" Survivor" did for me is confirm what @$$ holes average people are,the worthiest (IMO) contestants never got to come back ,the most worthy contestant (IMO ) was an elderly Japanese descended player ,He was smart ,altruistic and could read people .Its a shame He didnt get to come back ,I wish people like Him would move in next door .
One thing I liked about" Fear Factor" was ,Joe Average ,oft times kicked a$$ . Now as for" Dog eat Dog " ,it was totally asinine ridiculous ,I always wondered about the MC .
Can someone answer this question ,where did the "Survivor " contestants go to the bathroom at ? Did the producers furnish Porta Johns ? Because of health and enviromental concerns ,I figured they must .I dont bother to watch that show anymore because of the wandering from the original format and because they draw it out so long .But it did prove one thing to Me ,the average modern man wouldnt last long in the Wilderness as far as those other "survival " shows ,bunk .If you want to eat fat juicy grubs ,then go for it . See, now, if you had watched this season's premier you would have found out EXACTLY where Survivor contestants "drop a deuce".

It's called "Aqua Dumping". They go in the open ocean. They actually get training on how to do it, and are usually assigned an area for such. A few seasons ago one (particularly nasty, but for several other reasons) contestant managed to lose his underwear to the sea while doing so, and while seeing an overweight middle aged postal worker walking around in a banana hammock was bad enough, once he lost that his attempts at using other articles of clothing as undershorts was almost amusing.

I used to watch Swamp People but my viewing fell off. This is the last season so I'll have to try and catch it once in a while. It always amazes me how "handy" people, who have next to nothing, are.
FYI, the picture of the two guys, one of them is now dead. RIP.
