Re: “Memory of a mortadella sandwich”
Oh sweetie darling that sounds fun, but I'm thinking of using my vacation time to go to the UK, now that it's going to be dirt cheap.
GAH!
Re: “Memory of a mortadella sandwich”
Don't worry, I wasn't inviting you for a week at the beach, my house isn't big enough for your whole crew. You should go to the UK, absolutely. Although given the drop in the Euro too, lots of other places will be cheap as well (South of France, anyone??).

Goodness, I was just thinking the same thing. And those nice hardworking Turks, Spaniards and Italians in London are quite enthusiastic about the American custom of 'tipping'. A little lagniappe to the concierge when you arrive at the hotel and it is just a whole different experience.Sue U wrote:Oh sweetie darling that sounds fun, but I'm thinking of using my vacation time to go to the UK, now that it's going to be dirt cheap.

Yes, I suppose I could agree with you ... but then we'd both be wrong, wouldn't we?

Re: “Memory of a mortadella sandwich”
I wasn't going to start posting here again till I got back from vacation...but it just so happens that earlier this evening my wife & I & my eldest daughter & her husband had exactly this meal (well, minus the lemon, to be honest...but with other goodies added) on a dock--yes, with a view--in Round Pond, Maine!Guinevere wrote:Lobster isn't expensive compared to many other high quality proteins. It isn't meant to be eaten in fancy restaurants or covered in sauces anyway. Get a steamed pound and a half lobster, melt a little butter, cut up a lemon, sit at a picnic table outside (even better with a view but that's not required), and eat first class peasant food (for that's what it really is). Nothing like it.
Indeed!Nothing like it.

Round Pond or Muscongus Bay co-ops?
Do NOT miss the Round Pond Fourth of July parade --- it is hysterical and fun and charming all at once.
Go over to Pemaquid Harbor for a margarita at Contented Sole, walk up to the top of Fort William Henry, stop at The Cupboard on Huddle road for the amazing cinnamon buns, and if you like the beach Pemaquid beach is charming (and one of my all-time favorites). And of course do not miss the most beautiful lighthouse and vista ever.

Sunrise, Pemaquid Point, January, minus 5 degrees
I've got recommendations all day if you need them (until last year, Mom lived just across the peninsula) and I'll be there for my annual vacation with my family in August.
Where are you staying?

Muscongus...and of course we brought our own beer and pick-a-nick stuff. Saw the parade earlier today & it was indeed a hoot
(When we were planning the trip we at first thought we might start home Sun. night or Mon. morning, but our daughter insisted that we had to see the parade...& of course she was right. The SIL was actually *IN* the parade, rowing a boat on a roof rack atop a pickup truck.) We've been staying at The Carpenter's Boat Shop, where both of them are working for the summer; we'll be leaving for home tonight.

Excellent, and glad you stuck around for the parade!
You've been barely 10 minutes from Mom's house. Until she sold last year, we've had homes on that peninsula for the last 35 years. It was the end of an era, but luckily my generation and the one below all love the place so we will always spend time up there, and there are many lovely cottages to rent. The boys get cranky if they don't get up to Maine a couple of times a year.
Safe travels home, Econo.

Re: “Memory of a mortadella sandwich”
A quick follow-up for Guin (since the thread is dead except for this digression)...
Here's a pic of my son-in-law Randy in the Round Pond 4th-of-July parade. (He's got a garden hose hooked up to a bilge pump hooked up to a battery and a 30-gallon barrel of water in the bed of the pickup--in order to spray back at the kids who line the parade route near the end and squirt water at the paraders.)
...and BTW (if you don't already know about this) if you're up there later this summer, you're welcome to stop by the boat shop any weekday at 10AM for their community "tea break"--usually coffee, tea and (fresh-baked-by-my-daughter) muffins.

I definitely plan on stopping by, and bringing the boys too, thank you! Hope you enjoyed your time in paradise, it's one of my most favorite places on earth (and where I have spent the vast majority of my last 30+ birthdays). So yea, will be back in August

Re: “Memory of a mortadella sandwich”
I just had a memory of meatball sandwich. I'm sharing it with the rest of the family and charging $25.00
