Dining out recommendations

Danish cuisine reigns supreme, according to the some of the planet's most prominent eaters.

S. Pellegrino's annual "World's 50 Best Restaurants" list was released on Monday at a celebrity-chef-studded event in London, England, marking the ninth edition of the much buzzed-about (and hotly debated) catalogue of the international culinary landscape.

The No. 1 spot goes to Noma in Copenhagen, Denmark. The restaurant, helmed by chef René Redzepi, ranked No. 3 in 2009. The Guardian newspaper's restaurant critic Jay Rayner -- better known to U.S. food fans as a judge on "Top Chef Masters" -- agrees with the judges' decision.

Writes Rayner on The Guardian's food blog, "Is that the right result? Allowing for the fact that I think the rankings are far less interesting than the list itself, I would say, yes. Redzepi, the 32-year-old chef at Noma, pursues a regional, seasonal agenda that is right on the cutting edge: if it isn't available in the Nordic region, he won't cook with it. The result is a very idiosyncratic style of food that speaks to concerns about the way a global food culture turns our eating experiences a uniform beige."

Noma's ascension to the top slot ends the reign of a culinary titan.

After four consecutive years ranked as the World's Best Restaurant, Spanish restaurant El Bulli takes a seat at No. 2. However, that won't make it any easier to snag a table. Only 8,000 reservations are accepted every year, out of a reported million requests.

The dethroning of Catalonia's culinary king, Ferran Adrià, comes after his announcement of plans to close the Mecca of molecular gastronomy for two years in December 2011.

In 2014, the restaurant will reopen as a nonprofit foundation -- "a think tank of gastronomic creativity" for 20 to 25 young chefs. Despite the second-place finish, Adrià was still awarded Restaurant Magazine's Chef of the Decade honor.

The illustrious list is compiled by The World's 50 Best Restaurants Academy -- an 806-member panel of the globe's most venerated chefs, food critics, restaurateurs and gourmands.

"The list creates tremendous debate -- and it's meant to," according to the World's 50 Best release.

Eight of the restaurants crowned this year -- Alinea in Chicago, Illinois; Daniel, Per Se, Le Bernardin, Momofuku Ssäm Bar, wd~50 and Eleven Madison Park in New York; and The French Laundry in Yountville, California -- are in the United States, this year's most honored country.

Of the remaining 42 top finishers, six are in France; Spain and Italy each have five. Here is the full list:

What's the most that you would pay per head, for a meal?

We've eaten at Rick Stein's "The Fish Restaurant", and Jamie Oliver's 15 Cornwall, and both were about £60 per head, not including drinks,.

Hen and Hatch are insisting we got to "The Fat Duck", next time we are in the UK at £150.00 per head.

What's your top limit?

Rick Stiens was three courses and a bottle of wine, one beer and a soft drink.

Jamie Oliver was a degustation of seven courses. (I can't remember what drinks were had? Probably because I had too many.)

Heston Blumenthal's Fat Duck gives you a degustation course for the £150.00. There will be no drinks included in that.

Now that the Ozzie dollar has picked up against the UK pound and the Yank dollar, paying $300 for lunch per person doesn't sound that bad ... when you consider who is behind the meal. I love Heston, me.

Too bad you are a vego Gob. You won't be able to come with me and her. Heston doesn't cater for rabbits.

It depends on what's in the meal, where I am, who I'm with, and what i'm in the mood for. I If its good food, I'm happy to pay anywhere from a couple of bucks from a cart on the street to a couple of hundred in a lovely restaurant.

When it comes to 'celebrity chefs' I am a real sucker.

I will pay a substantial price to eat at a restaurant of a renown chef.

To date I have never been disappointed. We have eaten at Rick Stein's six times in total (if you include the gorgeous breakfasts when we stayed in his hotel, St Petroc's, in Padstow).

that picture made me quite homesick for a moment!!!

I did my work experience with Rick Stein in Padstow just before qualifying when I was doing my training!

Nice Guy...obsessed with that bloody dog...got to cook for JackNicholson and Angelica Houston who was in Newquay shooting a movie!!

Never fancied eating at 15.....bunch of reprobates who prolly spat in all the food as they didn't get on telly.

The Fat Duck...I think 150 quid is quite reasonable!! I think though paying that sorta cash your dining partner/s would have to be chosen very carefully!

Don't be impressed....a mate of mine did his with Marco Pierre White......thats impressive......he ended up working for him for 5 years (dosn't give a reference if you can't make it to 3 years with him!) He was a brilliant chef, hes now wasting his talents as a firefighter!

I will pay whatever for a good meal. Our advantage is we are non-drinkers so we save a few bucks when we dine out.

I think the most I have ever spent on our 2 meas combined was likely $250. And it was tiny-arsed food requiring a run through a drive up later to fill up.

Actually it was really good. But I am lower-middle classed enough to want to be full at the end of the meal.
