Swimming with the sharks . . .

Post by Guinevere »

. . . and no shark cages. Diana Nyad, at 61, kicked off her 103 mile swim from Havana, Cuba to Key West last night (Sunday) at 7PM. She has a full support crew, but may not have any physical assistance (like hanging on a boat or kayak) as she takes in nutrition and water. She also has two kayakers towing an electonic device that is supposes to keep the sharks away. As of lunch time today, she was over 20 miles into the swim. Go Diana, swim strong!!

24 hours in, she's about 30 miles out of Havana now. Going into the colder, darker, night now.

Regular updates, and some great photos on Diana's website here: http://diananyad.com/

Heard about this on NPR. Amazing lady! :D

An amazing attempt, very courageous, best of luck to her!

Well mother nature had other ideas. Winds picked up, tides dragged her eastward, and heavier than expected swells made her seasick. 39 hours and 50 miles into it -- about half-way, she came out of the water. A couragous decision, and a heroic and inspiring effort. Sometimes it really is about the journey and not the destination.

Holy crap. Nearly two straight days and 50 mikes.

I can't begin to imagine how her shoulders feel.

There is no shame in not reaching an arbitrary, pre-determined goal when you have achieved so much without reaching it. My imaginary hat is doffed.
Bah!

So she failed once again. Too bad.

She could always be a "Trivial Pursuits" question, in the "failure edition".

You seem very familiar with that edition... I didn't realise that there was such a thing.
Why is it that when Miley Cyrus gets naked and licks a hammer it's 'art' and 'edgy' but when I do it I'm 'drunk' and 'banned from the hardware store'?
