"Australian Football"

Post by Lord Jim »

I was doing a little channel surfing yesterday, and I came across a listing for an "Australian Football" game....

I expected that it would either be a soccer game or maybe an American style football game being played by members of an Australian league....

Nay nay....

I clicked it on, and I have to say it was just about the strangest sporting event I have ever seen....

It appears to be some sort of bizarre hybrid between football, soccer and rugby....

The players were dressed in sleeveless shirts and tight short shorts, and they ran around non-stop, like in a soccer game....

But they used what appeared to be a slightly over-sized version of an American football, they used both their hands and their feet, and got tackled....

And they would score by kicking the ball through American style goal posts....

I watched it for about 10 minutes, and couldn't for the life of me figure out exactly what the hell was supposed to be going on....

I've been here ten years Jim, I still haven't a clue.

Very athletic and hard game though.

Interestingly, most of the comments by Americans on the youtube clips are very positive indeed.

We Yanks are great fans of gratuitous violence, regardless of what form it takes.

I should say something in defense of this Sporting Code. But since they changed it from VFL to AFL, I lost interest.

Oh ... I know.

You get great bodies throwing themselves at each other.

You can't fault the physique of the players.
Bah!

The first time I watched it it took me 10 mins to realise that there was a ball in there somewhere!

I went to the International Rules game between Australia and Ireland a few weeks ago. Brilliant! The first player fight broke out as the teams took the field. That set the tone for the rest of the evening. :D
Why is it that when Miley Cyrus gets naked and licks a hammer it's 'art' and 'edgy' but when I do it I'm 'drunk' and 'banned from the hardware store'?

Well, it's obvious that the uniforms were selected with the intent of bringing in a female audience...

I was going to copy and paste the rules for "Australian Football" but they are so extensive, arcane, and complex, (I started to get a headache just halfway through reading them) that I'm just going to provide the link for anyone who may be interested:
