Planned Parenthood is not the only source of free birth control; county/city health departments all over the country provide birth control, generally free or very low cost.

Not to mention the fact that birth control pills are readily available with a prescription in thousands of pharmacies all over the country...

Maybe instead of totaling up the number of Planned Parenthood locations around the country to judge the availability of contraceptives, we should be totaling up the number of clinics, hospitals, drug stores and supermarkets....

Not being a medical scientist, I don't have any first-hand knowledge about the "Plan B" pill, but I will quote a local physician/researcher on the subject (Dr. Chris Kahlenborn). The claim has been made that if a woman takes the Plan B pill within three days after intercourse it can prevent an egg from being fertilized. Not so:

"...if plan B is given close to the time of ovulation, it has little efficacy in preventing ovulation and any efficacy would likely be due to an abortifacient effect. This research is supported by Dr. Horacio Croxatto, one of the world's leading researchers of Plan B, who found that Plan B given within 48 hours of ovulation only definitely stopped ovulation in 12 percent of cases...Plan B likely works at times by causing an early abortion, and the claim that it effectively stops ovulation or fertilization is not supported by the medical literature. Plan B should be labeled for what it is: an abortion pill."

Not that that matters if one is "Pro-Choice."

"the pill" doesn't even prevent the egg from being fertilized it (like Plan B)prevents the egg from attaching to the uterine wall. THe idiotic Idea that that is abortion means anyone reasonably fertile that failed to get pregnant after one ovulation is a murderer.
Okay... There's all kinds of things wrong with what you just said.

Given that it's estimated 1/4 to 1/3 of pregnancies result in spontaneous miscarriage before the mother even realizes she is pregnant, GOD is the biggest ABORTIONIST of all!!

And whose estimate would that be? You are talking about fertilized eggs being spontaneously aborted?

Check any reasonably reliable resource on the reproductive system of the human female.

Or, ask any OB/GYN who has been extensively trained on said system.

eta:

http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/miscarriage/DS01105
Miscarriage is the spontaneous loss of a pregnancy before the 20th week. About 15 to 20 percent of known pregnancies end in miscarriage. But the actual number is probably much higher because many miscarriages occur so early in pregnancy that a woman doesn't even know she's pregnant. Most miscarriages occur because the fetus isn't developing normally.

Miscarriage is a relatively common experience — but that doesn't make it any easier. Take a step toward emotional healing by understanding what can cause a miscarriage, what increases the risk and what medical care might be needed.

Here's one, Dave:
It is estimated that up to half of all fertilized eggs die and are lost (aborted) spontaneously, usually before the woman knows she is pregnant. Among those women who know they are pregnant, the miscarriage rate is about 15-20%. Most miscarriages occur during the first 7 weeks of pregnancy. The rate of miscarriage drops after the baby's heart beat is detected.

Yea, in my family, a woman rarely 'announces' her first pregnancy, until well at the end of her first trimester. We all know, her first may not 'take', it's that common. When/if she miscarries, we can easily console her that, her body 'just needs to get used to the changes' and at least she knows she's fertile now.

True. About one out of six planned and desired pregnancies supported by the very best medical care are terminated by god.

I was curious about whether there is any hard, scientific evidence of the incidence of spontaneous abortion.

The following does not read to me like the result of scientific inquiry:

"It is estimated that up to half of all fertilized eggs die and are lost (aborted) spontaneously, usually before the woman knows she is pregnant. Among those women who know they are pregnant, the miscarriage rate is about 15-20%. Most miscarriages occur during the first 7 weeks of pregnancy. The rate of miscarriage drops after the baby's heart beat is detected."

It may be true, and it seems plausible, but it sounds like something that was just made up, hence the introduction: "It is estimated..." If there were any studies supporting it, they probably would have been cited.

My daughter-in-law seems to have had at least one "spontaneous abortion" before getting pregnant this time, but we have a heartbeat now, and will soon be sonographically searching for a penis, so things appear to be moving along nicely.

Ignorance is remediable but you have to have an interest in the truth:

"...
Epidemiology

Determining the prevalence of miscarriage is difficult. Many miscarriages happen very early in the pregnancy, before a woman may know she is pregnant. Treatment of women with miscarriage at home means medical statistics on miscarriage miss many cases.[15] Prospective studies using very sensitive early pregnancy tests have found that 25% of pregnancies are miscarried by the sixth week LMP (since the woman's Last Menstrual Period).[53][54] However, other sources reports suggest higher rates. One fact sheet from the University of Ottawa states, "The incidence of spontaneous abortion is estimated to be 50% of all pregnancies, based on the assumption that many pregnancies abort spontaneously with no clinical recognition."[55] The NIH reports, "It is estimated that up to half of all fertilized eggs die and are lost (aborted) spontaneously, usually before the woman knows she is pregnant. Among those women who know they are pregnant, the miscarriage rate is about 15-20%." [56] Clinical miscarriages (those occurring after the sixth week LMP) occur in 8% of pregnancies.[54]

The risk of miscarriage decreases sharply after the 10th week LMP, i.e. when the fetal stage begins.[57] The loss rate between 8.5 weeks LMP and birth is about two percent; loss is “virtually complete by the end of the embryonic period."[58]

The prevalence of miscarriage increases considerably with age of the parents. One study found that pregnancies from men younger than 25 years are 40% less likely to end in miscarriage than pregnancies from men 25–29 years. The same study found that pregnancies from men older than 40 years are 60% more likely to end in miscarriage than the 25–29-year age group.[59] Another study found that the increased risk of miscarriage in pregnancies from older men is mainly seen in the first trimester.[60] Yet another study found an increased risk in women, by the age of 45, on the order of 800% (compared to the 20–24 age group in that study), 75% of pregnancies ended in miscarriage.[61]

15% is 1 out of 6. You know that, right? God is the great abortionist. Of course the Catholic church thought life began at 'quickening' (roughly 24 weeks) until the 1800s when empirical science taught them the details of conception.
