Is it just me, or is there an inordinate amount of Californians posting regularly here?

Tuition for my daughter at a private university is over $30,000, but I get a pretty good discount because I teach there. Out of state tuition at public olleges is also much higher than in state tuition. As for where it is going, it's not to the faculty; granted I'm just an adjunct, but the tuition for just one student in my graduate course is more than my entire slalry for teaching it--and I always have 35-40 students.
She attends the University of Maryland so yes, out of state tuition. I tried to get her to go to Genesseo (state school which would have been about 1/4 of the price) but she had her heart set on Maryland. And after she busted her ass in high school and graduated 8th in her class of about 2000 and was accepted to the Honors school in Maryland, who could tell her no. Genesseo is a good school but the daughter wanted the "whole college experience", going to football/basketball/etc games, the big campus life and all that. And she has done very well at Maryland. I think she has gotten one 'B' so far, all the rest of her grades have been A's.
We had saved more than enough for her to go to a state school, that account was depleted two years in. It's drained some of my savings since but good thing we have always been frugal and she'll only have less than $20k in student loans when she is done this coming May (unless she opts for a masters degree, but she's on her own for that).

And Gob yes, you pay more if you are an out of state resident, in our case 4 times more.

Wow, that's one hell of a hike for a college in the same country. Bu,t as I suppose, we can consider your states as countries in their own right for administration purposes, it's not entirely bad form. What justifies that huge hike? Are external students subsidising indigenous state students?

BTW; Hatch has set her heart on going here;

Different country, THE most expensive in the UK.

Gob--theoretically, all students are charged the same tuition, but the state pays for som of the the college expenses of the in-state students, and this is the reason in state students pay lower tuition. I'm not sure which is making out better (even out of state students at public colleges pay a lower tuition than they would at an equivalent private college) as i relly haven't seen a breakdown.
