The Playoffs For A Real Sport Start Today...
Re: The Playoffs For A Real Sport Start Today...
Revenge for 1971 . . . at last!
That said, the "playoffs" start today. The game on Tuesday and the game on Wednesday were "play in" games to decide the final team that gets into the playoffs.

I hate football in the summer (August, no less) and Hockey in June. if I were the Goddess of All Sports, the major league sports seasons would go as follows:
Baseball: May 1-October 15
Football: October 1-Jan 15
Hockey: November 1-April 30
Basketball: who cares
Also, the Olympics would be every four years, not this every two years alternating winter and summer crap. And the Washington DC football team would be re-named the "Native Americans" so the city can have two sets of professional sports Nats to mirror the two sets of gnats that play on Capitol Hill.

Re: The Playoffs For A Real Sport Start Today...
I don't have a problem with Football starting in September after Labor Day, (which is the unofficial start of Fall) but I agree that having the regular season start on August is unseemly...(one change that was made that I do agree with was when the NFL went from six preseason games and 14 regular season to four preseason and 16 regular season...when you're talking about such a limited number of games total, that makes sense)
I would like to see the "bye week" that has strung the regular season out to 17 weeks eliminated...
When that was originally instituted a few years ago, it was done in conjunction with reducing the two week break between the league championships and the Super Bowl down to one...
As I recall that lasted all of one season, before the NFL decided that they were losing too much revenue by eliminating that extra week of Super Bowl hype...
But the "bye week" has remained; I see no reason for it...
I'll never forgive Robert "Roasting In Hell For All Eternity" Short for that...(Sure it was 43 years ago and I was only 12 at the time, but if there's one thing I know how to do...especially when it comes to sports...it's carry a grudge...
)
And they're doing it without Joe Hardy or Mr. Applegate...All they really need is heart:

Re: The Playoffs For A Real Sport Start Today...
i must confess an extreme dislike for kent tekulve and every pittsburg player from '79
Re: The Playoffs For A Real Sport Start Today...
I ain't forgivin' Tom Landry or Roger Staubach either...

Re: The Playoffs For A Real Sport Start Today...
at least staubach threw overhand..., and was the best QB ever
Re: The Playoffs For A Real Sport Start Today...
No, I'm sorry, that would be Fran Tarkenton...(I say this even though he was a NY Giant for five years; facts are facts)was the best QB ever
They both have the same lifetime completion percentages (57%) but Tarkenton played most of his career with no offensive line to speak of (Tarkenton was the quarterback who first invented "scrambling"... it was a matter of survival...and he was so good at it he played 17 years before he missed a minute of playing time due to injury... ) and nowhere near the consistent quality of receivers that Staubach had...
There's no comparison...
ETA:
Tarkenton is still #8 on the all time passing yardage list, despite the fact that he played his entire career when the NFL had 12 and then 14 game seasons, and he played most of those years on mediocre teams without star receivers, and under coaches who didn't have an air attack oriented offense...
You'll find "Roger the Dodger" down at number 83:

I agree with this, with the exception of baseball - the current MLB schedule is just fine with me, I couldn't possible wait another month for Opening Day!

I actually approve of this change...Also, the Olympics would be every four years, not this every two years alternating winter and summer crap.
I like having an Olympics competition every two years rather than having to wait four for both...

Anything happen in rounders last night?
In real sports - Tottenham robbed by a penalty call in almost the last minute and a 1-1 draw pleases only Arse-nil fans and miscellaneous Turks or whatever they were.

Re: The Playoffs For A Real Sport Start Today...
Wouldn't know, but in the opening games of AL divisional play, the Royals squeaked by the Angels 3-2 winning with a leadoff solo shot by Mike Moustakas in the 11th, and the Orioles pummeled the Tigers 12-3. The game was close through seven and a half (4-3 Baltimore) but the O's blew it open with a eight run rally in the bottom of the eighth.Anything happen in rounders last night?
Of course all real Americans already knew these things...But I wanted to help you and Strop keep up...(I'm sure he'll follow my description of last night's action with no problem...)

Re: The Playoffs For A Real Sport Start Today...
I guess if you're a baseball fan 5 1/2 months + is a good season, while the football season should end in 2 1/2 months. I would have no problem with a bit longer football season as it is the only sport I regularly watch. The Baseball season could be shorter for me, but it doesn't bother me as-is.bigskygal wrote:Guinevere wrote:I hate football in the summer (August, no less) and Hockey in June. if I were the Goddess of All Sports, the major league sports seasons would go as follows:

and Jim and wesw, you're both wrong. Best quarter back ever, Unitas.
Re: The Playoffs For A Real Sport Start Today...
If you've sat at a baseball game in the cold, wet, snowy April --- which I have both at Fenway and Camden -- you might agree the season could start a little later. Spring Training can be all March and April -- that only puts the schedule back 2 weeks and lets the players get fitter, and play in warmer weather (there isn't much worse for a player (especially pitchers) than cold conditions).
And while I want to say Unitas, I think its still Joe Montana. With Unitas second.

Re: The Playoffs For A Real Sport Start Today...
Guin--I have no problem with shortening the seasons or scheduling only southern games in the early part of it; I don't go to many baseball games, but I have been to a couple in the cold and it's no fun at all.
And as for football while I think Montana is a close second, I think Unitas edges him out; probably because Unitas played for all those seasons at a time when QBs were routinely pounded play after play while Montana got the benefit of some of the more recent protection rules (most of which I think make sense). and of course I saw him play while I was a boy, making him seem bigger than life to me. Tarkenton and Stauback are great QBs as well, just not quite up to the top. Other past greats would include Favre, Elway, Marino, and Bradhsaw. Of those still playing--Peyton Manning, Rodgers, Brees, and Brady are good and might one day get on the all-time list--time will tell.

I'm hoping for the Royals to win the pennant. I didn't really expect it...but I would have loved a Royals-Pirates WS.Lord Jim wrote:Wouldn't know, but in the opening games of AL divisional play, the Royals squeaked by the Angels 3-2 winning with a leadoff solo shot by Mike Moustakas in the 11th, and the Orioles pummeled the Tigers 12-3. Re: The Playoffs For A Real Sport Start Today...
The fix is not delaying Opening Day...it is better scheduling! The Red Sox should NEVER open at Fenway! The Twins should NEVER open in Minnesota! The first week should be played in Florida, California, Texas, Atlanta, Arizona, Toronto, and Seattle.Guinevere wrote:If you've sat at a baseball game in the cold, wet, snowy April --- which I have both at Fenway and Camden -- you might agree the season could start a little later. That's totally not fair to the northern clime teams. Plus, who trusts MLB to schedule ANYTHING correctly.Jarlaxle wrote:The fix is not delaying Opening Day...it is better scheduling! An addition to my Goddess of All Sports list:
All MLB interleague games shall be banned prior to the World Series (excepting the All Star game). Also, absent injury and placement on the DL, players who are elected to the All Star team MUST BE ON THE TEAM or else be ineligible for the post-season.
