Unfamiliar with secular left wing "animal rights" groups I take it? these are the ones most prominently waving the "animal rights" banner...

Any attempt to bestow "rights" on animals (other than humans) quickly runs into the problem of which animals have which rights.
humans have a duty and a right to BE humane to each other and to the world.
I agree with Meade and Econo... (there's a sentence I don't get to write very often... 8-) )

Animals don't have "rights" but humans have moral obligations. And among those moral obligations are obligations not to engage in capricious cruelty towards lower animal life.

As for Dr. Palmer...

I think the appropriate thing to do here would be to extradite him to Zimbabwe, (he hasn't been charged yet, but the two who helped him have been arrested for poaching; which carries a ten year sentence) where he can face the rigorous standards of Zimbabwean justice, and the quality accommodations of a Zimbabwean prison....

I don't know if animals have rights, but humans certainly have obligations (moral and legal) in how we treat them.

Extradition in Zimbabwe works for me.

He is being deservedly ostracized here. Dental office closed. He will be a pariah, probably for the rest of his life, if he doesn't do jail time in one country or the other.

How is "big game" hunting still even a thing? I can (barely) understand hunting deer, rabbits, etc. for food, but to kill an animal just to hang its head on the wall is thoroughly beyond my comprehension. What kind of person gets satisfaction from killing a living thing for a trophy? It's barbaric at best, and truly sick otherwise.
GAH!

Do we even have an extradition treaty with Zimbabwe? It would seem to me being extradited to Zimbabwe would qualify as cruel and usual punishment. I am not sure that it is even consider a crime to kill a white man in that country. Unless he was able to bribe someone conviction would be a forgone conclusion. And to go to prison in that country would result in being raped on a regular basis and contracting AIDS.

Nothing will happen to him in Zimbabwe; he relied on the guide/professional hunter and the guide/professional hunter is solely responsible under the laws of that country, from what I understand. :(

I don't 'get' the whole killing beautiful animals for 'sport'. :shrug

Animal rights groups are religious and not "left wing". That is just ignorant.

Some people don't get playing bagpipes for music either. But you have no more right to enforce your preferences about hunting than a bagpipe hater has to outlaw bagpipes.

Looks like we're in total agreement...

Yes, the statement "animal rights groups are religious and not left wing" is definitely "just ignorant"...

In fact it's completely ignorant...

I know that, and I didn't assert that I should be able to. In fact, while others are calling for the dentist's head, I pointed out that he is unlikely to face any consequences - except those visited upon him in the free marketplace.

Well, not so much:
Zimbabwe to U.S.: Extradite dentist over killing of Cecil the lion

(CNN)As outrage grows over the killing of Cecil the lion, Zimbabwe has called on the United States to extradite the American dentist who shot the prized big cat.

Zimbabwe has started extradition proceedings and hopes the United States will cooperate, said Oppah Muchinguri, the African nation's environment minister.

Walter Palmer "had a well-orchestrated agenda which would tarnish the image of Zimbabwe and further strain the relationship between Zimbabwe and the USA," Muchinguri said.

Palmer, his professional hunter guide, and the owner of the land where the hunt took place are accused of an illegal hunt under the country's Parks and Wildlife

Act, Muchinguri said in a statement.

Specifically, Palmer is accused of financing an illegal hunt, and he and the professional hunter are also accused of illegally using a crossbow "to conceal the illegal hunt" so they wouldn't alert rangers on patrol, she said.

The landowner allegedly allowed the hunt to be conducted without a lion quota and without the necessary permit, Muchinguri said.

"The professional hunter, client and land owner were therefore all engaged in poaching of the lion," she said.

She added, "This must be condemned in the strongest possible terms by all genuine, animal-loving conservationists who believe in sustainable utilization of natural resources."
American dentist says he regrets killing famed lion

Palmer, from Minnesota, has said he relied on the expertise of local guides "to ensure a legal hunt."

Ordinarily I would be opposed to extraditing an American citizen to a country like Zimbabwe....

but in this case I'm prepared to make an exception...

I wouldn't put a child molester in the hands of Uncle Bob. Well, maybe... but that's not the point.

Extradition of a US citizen to face trial in known bastion of illegal trials, corrupt judges and basic violations of human rights for all manner of peoples... that would be a travesty of the extradition process and disgusting kow-towing to a fascist dictatorship that gives not a real damn for this or any other lion.

For US citizens to consider even for a moment supporting this "request" is a symptom of diminished notions of justice and knee-jerk mob mentality
