Oh great, they're getting wed the day before me.

We can compare and contrast my budget wedding (under two grand) to their multi million pound extravaganza.

I love the British and it is not about kicking their butts twice. I had no part in that anyway. I find it interesting that anyone American would criticize them for being class conscious because in my opinion we are quite class conscious in this country the Brits are simply more honest about it. If there is any way I can manage it I will be back on British soil for the Queen's Golden jubilee since I was there for the silver one.

Hopefully at that time I will find someone who speaks English left there.

American Woman, care to elaborate on how Americans are "class conscious"?

To my eyes, the clearest distinction is that most (I think) Americans look with contempt at people who produce nothing and live on family money, while (it seems that) the English admire just about anyone with a "title," who does the same.

On a related point, when my wife was a Trust Officer at a major bank several years ago, I learned that there are a whole lot more "idle rich" in this country than I ever imagined. Widows of doctors were a particularly obnoxious group.

Maybe it's kind of like African Americans collecting racist memorabilia. I don't know; I have no interest in royal weddings.

Congrats Diz!!

Andrew, some Americans are "class conscious" in terms of money. (Which shows little class) Some are "class conscious" in terms of culture. Some Americans still respect and admire the historical nobility of other countries.

Interestingly enough when I moved to Australia from the UK I was told that I would notice a major difference because of the lack of a class system here.

Bollocks! There's just as much of a class system here. The only difference is that they don't acknowledge it or give fancy titles.

Agreed. A lack of overt class consciousness doesn't mean that class, and therefore class divisions do not exist.

I can recall being told, "He's not our kind dear." In fact in the 80's when everything went preppy that was one of the popular little acronyms NOKD. There are many people with money in this country that don't want their kids marrying "beneath themselves". If that is not observation of class distinction then I don't know what it is.

You can always call Daisy - and she can point you to the best curry. ;)

Oh god, I miss me Ruby's. For some strange reason Aussie curries are nowhere near as good as Brit ones. In fact the best curry I've had since leaving the UK (apart from when I've been back there) has been a Kiwi one!

Mind you the apprecaition of it may have had something to do with the fact that Me and Hen had it after a day-long glacier hike, and a soak in a thermal spring, followed by several icy cold Kiwi beers.
