Anybody Followng The NFL Playoffs?

Super Bowl Lines 2017 - NFL Line for Super Bowl LI (51)
NRG Stadium, Houston, TX, 2/5/17

Date & Time Favorite Line Underdog Total
2/5 6:30 ET New England -3 Atlanta 59

What... the Falcons ONLY getting 3 points? This betting psychology will draw the masses to the Patriots. Ergo, I'm going with the Falcons who will probably be getting 4 1/2 by game time.

Given the defenses of both teams, the over/under of 59 seems a bit high. True, both are good offensively, but if the teams are playing well I'd take the under.

Might be 6 by then.

Glad I don't bet.

I haven't watched football much since my late teens, and I am bothered by how huge the NFL industry has grown and how it minimizes violent behavior of players.

It bothered me to read that a drunken Pats fan set off the fire alarms in the hotel where the Steelers were sleeping at 3am on gameday. I wouldn't play my best after a disrupted sleep either - so the win is tinged in my book.

Well, I guess it's not surprising that a team known for dirty tricks would have fans that would engage in them too...

But you have to respect the guy's honesty:
The 25-year old East Boston man who pulled the fire alarm at the Pittsburgh Steelers team hotel early Sunday morning, forcing the team and other guests to evacuate, allegedly told Massachusetts State Police, “I’m drunk. I’m stupid. I’m a Pats fan” when he was apprehended.

An answer to the op: NO.

MLB Spring Training is just around the corner. :ok

Your collective inability to acknowledge this obvious truth makes you all look like fools.

I do not condone what that guy did, but last Super Bowl held in AZ, the fire alarms went off at the Pats hotel at some ridiculous hour of the AM three nights in a row.

So the idea didn't start in New England.

And PS - I saw several Steelers players interviewed about it and they said it wasn't an issue and it happens other places.

Without a rooting interest (which is pretty much all the time being a Jets fan) I watch, but not enthusiastically.
am bothered by how huge the NFL industry has grown and how it minimizes violent behavior of players.
It's a violent game. Anyone playing should know that going in. Sure, things can be done to minimize the injuries (especially concussions) but in the end the game is about knocking people down on to the ground. 200-300lb guys running full speed at each other is going to be violent. The atheletes have gotten faster and bigger, thus the collisions are going to be greater (F=MA). There is a limit to how much a body (and head) can take and I think they are finding that limit.
Want to limit concussions? Get rid of the hard plastic on the helmet (or the helmet all together) and go back tot he leather helmets. Not many are going to lead with their heads when there is minimal, or no protection for their noggin.
The concussion is not from the blow to the head, it's from the sloshing of the brain inside the skull cause by the sudden stop or change of direction. The only thing the helmet prevents is the big bruise on the outside. Sure some of the padding in the helmet helps cushion the blow, but in the end, the brain sloshes.
The same "sloshing" effect caused me to lose my sense of smell.

And the NFL is in it for the money. If there was no money to be made, there would be no NFL. How much is too much? I don't have an answer for that.

Oldr, I believe BSG may be talking about the off-field violent behavior of some players...

I think you're right Jim, but in this regard, NFL players are not different from any other celebrities, when you're doing well and on top, the bosses close ranks and protect you to protect their investment, when you're underperforming they throw you to the wolves to pretend that they really care. It's not just the NFL, it's the American way with out star struck celebrity culture--anything will be excused while you're generating profits for the owners, studios, etc.

If so, I missed that entirely.
My bad. :shrug

But now that begs the question, what is the leagues responsibility in that aspect? What is any corporations' responsibility?
We see/hear/are informed more because the NFL and it's players are beamed into our homes every sunday, monday (and thursdays and some saturdays).
Is it more/less prevailent in regular businesses?

Is the NFL responsible? To a large degree, certainly. Do some googling and you'll see the herculean efforts the owners go through to shield their star players (read money makers) from any responsibility for DUI, rape, assault of girlfriends and wives, assault of other members of the public, weapons charges, even drugs. Once in a while a marginal player will get thrown to the wolves and held up as an example of how the league "will not tolerate...", but mostly they just cover for them and use their considerable money and influence to get them out of trouble the rest of us would go to jail for.

Yes, I meant the domestic violence, animal abuse, general violent behavior off the field.

In the real world people get fired for those kinds of things all the time - football players are coddled and made excuses for by management.

The only thing I found truly outrageous about Deflatgate was that Brady would get suspended 4 games for that, when players who beat their wives/girlfriends often get zero punishment, or far less.

He should be fined 10x the cost of the emergency response, and get at least 2 years in prison for it.
