I feel bad for England, but on the other hand, I love an underdog so yay! Croatia for their first-ever trip to the World Cup final!

Why is this game even being played? Surely the players can't want it; in fact it seems kind of sadistic, after having come so close to the real prize, to force them to have to hang around and compete in this Also Rans Bowl...
I have a hard time believing the fans want it...
Unless soccer fans are really such a strange bunch that being able to parade down the street shouting "WE"RE NUMBER 3! WE"RE NUMBER 3!" is a bragging right that really appeals to them...
Call me cynical, but I can't help but think that the sole reason for this Battle Of The Almost Winners is for the money grubbers at FIFA to squeeze out a few extra ticket sale and TV rights ducats ...

FYI the first "third place" finisher was in the 1930 competition - the USA. (Although there was no game involved; FUBAR belatedly recognized the USA as third based upon their overall results, leaving Yugoslavia to the hind portion).
The FUBAR World Cup was not televised until 1954 so the "revenues" argument is not much of a winner. The principle reason seems to be to fill the gap between the long wait between semi-finals and final.
It is not more or less unworthy than the far more stupid "All-Star" games that Yankericans are so fond of, and a billion times more rational than the total waste of time and money spent on media jeans-creaming over "draft days".

They used to play a third place game at the NCAA tournament. This is how Bill Bradley was MVP of the Final Four in 1965. They ended the consolation game in 1981, apparently at the request of President Reagan who was trying to wring out wasteful spending in all segments of government and the economy.

Gee, I would think that "draft days" would be a really big event in Cleveland, seeing as how frequently the Browns' record entitles them to high picks...a billion times more rational than the total waste of time and money spent on media jeans-creaming over "draft days".
