At present, America can boast the best educated workforce in the world but in 50 years' time, the majority of those workers will be Hispanic. If they are uneducated, what hope is there for American global competitiveness?
So? They can still join the military, where they can gain citizenship, a skill and/or education, thereby making themselves productive citizens. In other words, they can work for it.

Most of the first Philippine immigrants served in the US Navy, by enlisting from their home country. Frankly, it's shame they were not allowed to be much more than stewards to the officers at the time, but it afforded they and their families many more opportunities to succeed than they otherwise would have had.

What their religion has to do with that, I dunno...

Oh wait, you're talking about the two most highly oppressed peoples of the white Caucasian Conquistadors. [Mexicans and Philippinos] Our cultures were stripped; our languages changed and our very family heritage challenged; all of this not much more than 200 years ago; in the name of TERRITORY, RICHES and GOLD, for the Royal Crown.

They established the social structure that said, the browner you were, the less education you would receive.

...yeah, that'll kinda mess with your long-term aspirations, but that's called Racism, not Roman Catholic anything.

So the smart governmental policy would be making contraception available to everyone, right?

Incorrect;
As of 2011 the Church operates the world's largest non-governmental school system...

International benefits
[edit] Preference for the poor

Catholic schools have experienced changes heralded by the Second Vatican Council in regards to Catholic social teaching cantered on the poor: “First and Foremost, the Church offers its educational services to the poor, or those who are deprived of family help and affection or those who are far from faith...”[21] These changes have led to instances in Brazil, Peru and Chile where the contributions has led to “a new way of being in school,” by including the disadvantaged and people in poor areas to education.
[edit] High attendance and performance

Empirical evidence in the United States and Australia indicates that education performance and attendance are greater in Catholic schools in contrasts to its public counter-parts. Evans and Schwab (1998) in their experiment found that attendance at Catholic schools in the United States increases the probability of completing high school or commencing college by 13%.[22] Similarly, an experiment conducted by Williams and Carpenter (1990) of Australia through comparing previous examination by private and public schools concluded that students in private education outperform those from government schools on all educational, social and economic indicators.[22]

Philippines

Since the time of the Spaniards, schools have been traditionally run by the church and the different religious orders. Parochial schools are run by the parishes while Catholic schools are administered by the dioceses or religious orders.
[edit] Metro Manila

In the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Manila and its suffragan dioceses, the parochial schools are being supervised by the Manila Archdiocesan Parochial Schools Association and its affiliates like the Diocese of Cubao Educational System or and the Parochial Schools Association of Novaliches. These organisations are overseen by the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines through the Episcopal Commission on Catechism and Christian Education.[citation needed]

Promoting birth control has only ever worked among the middle classes. Among poorer people, (a) they just don't give a care, (b) they are less likely to consider the long-term results of short-term decisions, and (c) they are not at all reluctant to depend on government handouts to support them and their offspring.

No population on earth (other than selfish middle class white people here and in Europe) has ever had its prospects significantly improved by mass utilization of birth control.

Thank you rube for again demonstrating what an idiot you are. "The Catholic church doesn't value education."

Priceless.

That's one of the problems with being a bigot; you're so ready to believe any negative thing about the group you don't like, that you don't bother to take the 20 seconds it would take to check your facts before you say something that makes you look like an ignorant buffoon.... :D

I've been wondering what sort of 'ist' is discriminatory against any or all religion. A racial bigot is a 'racist'. A sexual bigot is a 'sexist'.

A religious bigot is 'religist'. perhaps?

I don't have time to look this up right now, but IIRC, when birth control is made available to women in very poor areas (parts of Africa and India are what I remember reading about), family size tends to get smaller. Don't recall if this was in conjunction with increases in education.

I earned my law degree from a Jesuit university. The Jesuit tradition of education emphasizes not only the pursuit of personal excellence, but more importantly, service to others. Catholic universities include some of the finest, and parochial schools still provide a high quality education in many communities.

"Give me the child for seven years, and I will give you the man."

It is, of course, absurd to suggest that the Roman Catholic Church does not foster education.

(That is not to say that the Roman Catholic Church has always behaved that way. There have been times when it found widespread illiteracy more conducive than widespread education to its objectives.)

The more difficult questions are the extent to which the Roman Catholic Church has used education as a means of indoctrination (in the generally intended sense of that word) and the extent to which its attempts to use education as a means of indoctrination have not only failed but been, from the point of view of the would-be indoctrinator, counter-productive.

I reserve judgment.

I can speak only from my own experience of course but what I saw was a huge slant towards Catholic beliefs and doctrine in just about every subject. History became Catholics Vs The Rest and certain elements of Science was taught to me in an almost tongue in cheek way. Almost in a "This is what the textbooks say so we have to spout it to you but we know better don't we? Nudge-nudge, wink-wink" kind of way. It was the kind of indoctrination which was (thankfully) extremely counter-productive in my case but not in many cases. Simple Irish farm-boys (and girls) are not particularly difficult to indoctrinate. It's one of the main reasons why Catholicism has such a hold over that whole country.

Based on what past generations describe, Catholic schools of the past were drastically different then than they are now. It appears the parochial schools have changed for the times so that they can stay in business. Many of the best K-8 and high schools in this and many other metropolitan and small cities will be found at the Catholic schools. My experience, as a non-Catholic, is that they are first and foremost about providing a good secular education, teaching kids to respect other people, and their religion is present but minimal compared to every other type of religious school (probably about 1/4 of what I've seen at the Jewish day school or conservative Christian schools). And they provide this education at a very competitive price relative to other private schools. I agree with the others that the Jesuit colleges are outstanding and compete head-on with top colleges in many parts of the country.

I'm not talking about 50 years ago though LR... My Catholic school experience was in the 80s. I do know through friends in Ireland that not a lot has changed between then and now.

You could fill a pretty big pamphlet with highly-educated public figures who got much of their education at Catholic institutions and thumb their noses at core Catholic teachings. Many of them have written for the New York Times.

In the process of indoctrination, they regrettably teach us how to think for ourselves - provided you get past 8th grade. There is nothing worse than someone who went to 8 years of Catholic grade school and thinks s/he knows all about the Church.
