Cute toon!

I watched the coast to coast coverage on NASA and CNN and it was pretty cool!

I'd wanted to visit a college friend in South Carolina, but ultimately decided it was too much traveling for me right now. I am already making plans with my cousin in Maine for April 8, 2024 - we'll either do Baxter State Park, or a trip to Mexico if we can swing it. I definitely want to see a totality in person before I pass away!

It was cloudy here, with a little bit of rain; during the maximum (88%) of the eclipse, daylight diminished to something comparable to dawn or dusk. No worries about losing what's left of my eyesight...couldn't even discern a bright spot in the clouds. Pretty much what I expected: not much.

I'm glad I didn't bother driving to St. Louis and back like my sister did. Maybe without me there everybody down there had better luck with their viewing. (Andy? How was it by you?)

I liken it to having nose-bleed seats at a sporting event. Definitely felt the action and being "there", but if you wanted to see what was happening, watching the big screen at home provided a much better view.

The coolest thing about this event was the capacity to see totality, the corona, Baily's beads, the diamond ring effect over and over and over and over again as the NASA feeds caught every time zone.

But I want to see it in person once, to experience the sudden cooling of the air, the stillness and silence and twilight and different shadows created by the eclipse. I went outside here during the partial, didn't have glasses but did enjoy the altered light and the unusual middle of the day cricket chirping.

I turned away from the window to tend to the beef stew I was cooking, and missed it.

Ah well, Toronto will be just outside the edge of the path of totality in the 2024 eclipse, I'll get the glasses and do the full catastrophe then. And the bugger will be centered on Buffalo, if that isn't a portent of something fucked up to come, I'm not sure what is.

God bless our fearless leader. Let hope all those infrared radio waves he absorbed doesn't have him talking crazy stuff.

Gorgeous warm summer day here. The light dimmed a bit, but not for long, and then the sun roared back, seemingly brighter than ever.

Fun day to be on the beach and some friends got great shots with their telescope fitted with a solar filter.

But mama, that's where the fun is

Here, in downtown Kennett Square, the visible bulk of the sun remained so bright it mostly eliminated any shadow the moon created. A near non-event.

I viewed most of the event using the NASA website. It was excellently narrated and presented, with only a few continuity glitches in its entirety. It also showed the event at 50,000 feet via two eclipse chasing Warthogs.

2024? I think I can wait.

They said don't do it, but I watched the partial (96%) we got here through a welding helmet. With double filters. Took a few camera shots through those filters too, but I don't have a good enough telephoto lens.

Still a nice shot Dats.

Total Eclipse of the Heart has to be the most requested song of the day. I heard it twice during the day!

Probably the best Meat Loaf song that he never recorded.
According to Meat Loaf, Jim Steinman had written "Total Eclipse of the Heart", along with "Making Love Out of Nothing at All", for Meat Loaf's album 'Midnight at the Lost and Found'; however, Meat Loaf's record company refused to pay Steinman and he wrote separate songs himself.  "Total Eclipse of the Heart" was then given to Bonnie Tyler and "Making Love Out of Nothing at All" to Air Supply.  (Wikipedia)
