The reason she smiles when she remembers that gift is because it's probably the last present that she ever got from you wasn't paid for with her money....
I'm sure the fact that the long hours she works means she doesn't have to see you very much plays a very key role in this. I have no doubt the less one sees of you the easier you are to take. Makes keeping you around out of a sense of pity and obligation all that much easier....I like smart women. We get along pretty well.
Just make sure that she never finds out that hiring a maid a cook and a gardener would be cheaper than supporting you....
