I'd like a go at this....

A group of real ale fans from the West Midlands have finished their challenge to visit every pub in Wales.

Image

Their seven-year mission came to an end when they visited The Sand Martin pub next to Cardiff City stadium.

The self-styled Black Country Ale Tasters said they had notched up 3,905 pubs, and driven over 76,000 miles.

They have raised £11,000 for local charities along the way, with their last visit raising money for the Noah's Ark Children's Hospital for Wales.

The ale lovers consist of a dedicated group including Pete Hill, a machinist from West Bromwich, and friends John Drew and Malcolm Maynard.

They began their organised pub crawling in 1984 and by 2003 had earned a place in the record books after visiting inns in every county of England, Wales and Scotland.

It was the idea of Mr Hill's father, Joe, to turn their attention to Wales. He served in the army with a lot of Welsh soldiers and hoped he might "bump into some of them along the way".

They say they picked Wales because it has a manageable number of pubs whereas to do the same in England would have taken far longer.

Mr Hill said the pub crawl had taken up every weekend and holiday.

He said: "Every single holiday we've been to Wales for the last seven years.

"Around Cardiff there are 278 pubs so we had a half in a lot of them, until we stopped in our favourite ones where we stopped for a pint."

At each pub the team leave their Black Country Ale Tasters calling card and take a staff signature before they leave.

Seven years?

That's 558 pubs a year...(and they were only doing it on weekends and vacation days)

I have a funny feeling they may have split up and run around to a lot of these pubs dropping off cards and getting signatures without drinking anything, (maybe had other people helping them too) but since it was for charity, it really doesn't matter...

I doubt it Jim... These people take their ale very seriously.

Also I've been on Black Country pub crawls with people like these. 20+ pubs in a day is easily done.

20 pints in a day? Over and over again? Decent ale is what, 8% abv? Up to 12-14% for strong ales? I'd be paralytic.

I think they mentioned drinking halves in some places ... I hope so.

I'd say that would be impressive by anyone's standards, except maybe WC Fields or Hunter S. Thompson...

They said they did, "halves" in some of these places; I'm guessing it was more like a shot glass, or maybe just a couple of sips...

Also if any of these guys are married, how did their wives and children feel about them spending every single weekend and vacation day for seven years out power bar hopping?

And while none of these guys are skinny, they're not sporting huge guts either, and unless they lived on nothing but ice water and celery sticks when they weren't out pub crawling, I don't see how they managed to consume that much beer over so many years and avoid porking up...

The more I think about it, the more convinced I am that these guys had to have fudged this in some way...

But like I said before, since it was for charity, it really ain't no biggie...

Paul Sinha:
But what should the (Home Office) Guide be telling immigrants about the great British pub? Firstly, and most importantly, it is two shots on the black! It has always been two shots on the black! I have in my hand a copy of the official rules of 8-ball pool. Always carry these around with you. That might sound extreme but an estimated 75 percent of all pub fights could be resolved with this piece of paper. And by estimated I mean, number I plucked out of nowhere. Secondly, unless you are absolutely comfortable and open about your sexuality, never order a half pint. Thirdly, Real Ale. The Campaign for Real Ale is the number one pressure group in the UK. Yeah, it’s very much like the British equivalent of the NRA only… more angry. And if you find yourself in a Real Ale pub, this is my advice. Make a random pick and pretend that you like it – even if you don’t. That way you won’t look out of place. For added effect, don’t shave for 6 weeks. Don’t dress well. And don’t be a woman.

Actually, most American beers, (being relatively lighter) should be easier to drink in large quantities then those heavy lukewarm jobs that have both more calories and higher alcohol content.... 8-)

Ooh, now that's now that's not a group of folks I'd want to get on the bad side of.... :D

Jim--when I used to travel to England a lot, many of my British colleagues chose to drink american beers (like bud) because they had a higher alcohol content (I neve runderstood it, I liked the british lagers). I'm not sure about the calorie count, but many british beers are 3.2% alcohol or less, american beers are 3.6-3.8%.

Sink the Bismarck! is beer, amplified. With the volume turned full up, it is important you that you be careful with this beer and show it the same amount of sceptical, tentative respect you would show an international chess superstar, clown or gypsy. Sink the Bismarck is a quadruple IPA that contains four times the hops, four times the bitterness and frozen four times to create at a staggering 41% ABV. This is IPA amplified, the most evocative style of the craft beer resistance with the volume cranked off the scale. Kettle hopped, dry hopped then freeze hopped for a deep fruit, resinous and spicy aroma. A full out attack on your taste-buds ensues as the incredibly smooth liquid delivers a crescendo of malt, sweet honey, hop oils and a torpedo of hop bitterness which lasts and lasts.

The Scots are mental...
Style: Eisbock
Aboyne, Scotland
Serve in Dimpled mug, Snifter, Stein

The world’s strongest beer at 65%. Ingredients include crystal malt, wheat, flaked oats and of course 100% Scottish spring water. We then freeze ferment the beer to bring up the ABV. Consume this like a fine whisky. Despite being 65%, the beer has a lot of flavour - malty, hoppy, slightly sweet and lots of yeast still in the beer. Be careful though, smelling it is probably enough to put you over the limit!

130 proof beer...

Now that's for the truly hardcore...

The only thing I'm familiar with that's sold commercially for drinking purposes with a higher alcohol content would be Bacardi 151....

Damn, I need to figure out a way to get my hands on some of that to use in my mother's limoncello recipe. You can't buy anything here that's more than 40% alcohol, and it doesn't work as well.
