Man, That Was A HELLUVA Game!

not...

In fact that was an embarrassment...

The Number One Offense, versus the Number One Defense squaring off...

Should have been epic...

Not so much....

I knew things weren't going to follow a predicable script when the Seahawks got a "safety" score at the opening of the game...

Even lousy teams go numerous seasons without ever giving up a safety...

A safety is a pretty rare thing in NFL level football, (you have to be really disorganized and unlucky to have that happen) So when I saw the AFC Champions give that up at the outset of the game, I immediately thought, "Hmm...This does not bode well for the Broncos..."

And then it got worse...

The fellow wearing Peyton Manning's jersey must have been an imposter...a space alien pod replacement, or a junior high school kid who somehow must have slipped by security, while the real Peyton Manning was tied up in a closet somewhere...

There's no way that could have been the same guy who passed for 400 yards against the Patriots just two weeks before...

To say he looked like "a deer in the headlights" would be an insult to deers that stand in headlights...

When they went into the locker room at half time down 22-0, Bronco head coach John Fox's "pep talk" must have consisted of "Give up, it's all over", because the first thing they did was give up a kickoff run back for a touchdown...(with tackling attempts that I could have done a better job at... )

At that point the Denver defense completely laid down...

The Seahawks spent the rest of the game just trying to run out the clock, and they still managed to score three more touchdowns...

The only thing one can say for The Number One Offense In The NFL is that they managed to avoid the total humiliation of a shutout...

Right after that second half opening touchdown run I made a trip to our local corner score to pick up another bag of ice and some more juice for all the munchkins we had running around, (with some of Kelly's relatives and their friends over for the game, we probably had nearly a dozen in the 3-9 year old age range...The dogs loved all the attention, but I felt really sorry for the cat...) and the store owner asked me if I knew what the "spread" was on the game....

At this time we were watching the Seahawks score yet again on the TV in the store...

I laughed and said, "I don't know what the spread was on this game, but whatever it was, I think it's safe to say that if you had the Broncos, you lost. And if you bet the over-under and took the under, don't plan on meeting up with your bookie to pick up your winnings..."

Peyton Manning set a Super Bowl record of 33 completions.
Go figure

Yep, a big disappointment. I really thought the game would be a good one; the only thing worse was the stupid parade of commercials.

Manning is, as I have always said, WAY overrated.

So did I. I think most people did. The general consensus was that it would be match-up of similar quality to Niners-Seahawks NFC Championship game...
the only thing worse was the stupid parade of commercials.
While most of them were pretty weak, compared to the game, those were the only things worth not changing the channel for...

The folks who have to be the most pissed off are CEOs at relatively small up and coming companies who shelled out 4 million bucks for a 30 second spot only to have their ad aired during the fourth quarter...

I haven't seen the stats, but I've got to believe that the viewership took a huge nosedive between the first and second halfs...

I loved something I read on a comment board this morning - even when Peyton Manning threw in the towel it got intercepted.

I don't know, I kind of hoped for something to happen word the end (not to change the inevitable, but at least to show a little excitement). And this was one of the first halftime shows I watched in a long time (my daughters play a lot of Bruno Mars, and I like some of it), but someone has to let the Red Hot Chili Peppers know that taking your shirts off onstage after a certain age is just sad.

The only game that was more one-sided was when the 49ers played Denver in Superbowl 24 and won 55-10.

Denver should get a clue and stop trying to go to the Superbowl.

Pats first SB (XX) wasn't any better: Bears beat them 46-10.

Dreadful game, weak commercials (though I thought the Doritos 'time machine' was cute), dreadful halftime show.

Since this was the 1st year that either state has legalized pot, it would appear Colorado is the place to be.

Dales you have a sideline report for us?

I was supposed to watch the game (recorded) starting at 9:30 a.m. Monday - I expected a nice morning, not drinking beer and anticipating a nice lunch during the 4th quarter. As it was, I was unable to sleep Sunday night and finally got back out of bed at 1:15 a.m. and - mirabile dictu! - the game started live at 1:30 a.m. So with no beer and no food, guess who foolishly sat and watched it until almost the end, finally stumbling into bed and sleep (until 11 a.m.) around 5 a.m?

The broadcast was not the normal feed from USA bog-standard networks. It was the NFL network. This became noticeable early on when the two commentators (a) actually described the "game" that was going on; (b) explained football rules clearly and (iii) did not babble on endlessly about player histories from pre-puberty to their latest jail break.

They did at first miss that the errant snap on the Broncos' first 1st down was partly due to the center's not realising that Manning had stepped forward to change the play - which may also be down to Manning rather than just the center. They also failed to criticise that Denver idiot kick receiver for running out of the end-zone instead of taking the guaranteed 20 yard touch back. What they did there was to credit the idiot with a 21 yard kick return (to the 14!) when in my view the first 7 yards shouldn't count (who's there to stop him? Apart from his own team who should have tackled him in the endzone before he got out of it). And he did it again before his brain jumped into gear.

The Denver offensive line was annihilated; the receivers were covered; and did Denver ever get out of their "hurry up and die" strategy? Did they even once settle down in a normal huddle and give themselves time to calm down - or did they continue 60 minutes of running around like the proverbial headless chickens which played right into Seattle's calm, tough and yet flexible defensive strategy? Let's face it, if Denver had slowed the game down, they might have lost by a lot less points and avoided the abject humiliation with which their players, coaches and fans must still be racked. Of course, for two groups several hundreds of thousands of dollars applied to the affected area tends to ameliorate the suffering.

Commercials: the advantage of living in Kwa-Zumasatool land is that our commercials replaced yours. Unfortunately the same cannot be said for the Shit Cold Chilly Peasants who smeared up the half-time. So awful was that, one was forced to switch to the Discovery Channel and learn about the Five Humungousest Airplanes in the world!! (My favourite was the Airbus Beluga with a big shout out for the Spruce Goose, which is neither so there!).

My other amusement during the game was to swat moths and other flying critters in the living room. One then deposits their little bodies at various places on the carpet and times how long it takes for the teeniest ants in the world to find one and drag it back to their lair (behind the skirting board at the end of the bookcase). The longest gap from corpse placement and discovery (over ten feet from their home) was between when the unfortunately selected opera lady warbled the first note of the N.Anthem and the kick off. Other than that, the average detection time for the ants was from when Denver next got the ball and Seattle scored from the turnover. There were a lot of insect corpses.

I got to the tee-vee in time for the halftime show, which I thought was great. I initially thought RHCP would be a terribly odd pairing with Bruno Mars, but they actually worked very well together (for the one song, anyway). And Mars's stage show was a very pleasant surprise, with appreciative nods to the intertwined histories of pop, rock and soul. I'm hardly a prude, but for a "family hour" show I was glad to see some very polished and rather old-school singing and dancing, with no grinding sexuality and no gratuitous obscenity (although I could have done without the smarmy glorification of the military). Having tween daughters, I have heard a lot of Bruno Mars over the last few years but had never been particularly impressed; now I'd actually like to see him play live in a smaller venue (if he is even allowed to do that anymore). I may have missed my chance.

As for the football game, it was simply jaw-dropping to see Seattle completely stymie virtually every play the Broncos put up. Number one defense for sure.

He plays basketball arenas which tend to be about 1/4 the size of a football stadium. ;) Like you, I was pleasantly surprised by the half-time show (if they have to have a half-time show, this was one the best) -- it was G rated and the music was good to acceptable for the general population. They could have left the shirtless guys out; they added nothing to the show.
