I like the darker one better.

The one on the bottom looks like one I bought used in college...
The one on the top looks like something grown-ups would actually own...

My grandparents had the kind of corner set in the top picture. I used to see those more in the 1960s and 70s than now. They often had people stopping by to visit so the extra seating room was useful. We have two separate couches, or a couch and a love seat. Having two separates with an end table in the corner gives a place for a lamp, a surface to put guns on and a SU-PERB place to trap dust badgers.
I think it depends on functionality. If you want more room, then go with the upper one, trap dust badgers*, go with the lower one.

In the end we went for two of these;
We're having them made in a dark fabric, rather than white leather though.
