Played by: Brian Hewlett

Status: Married to Susan Carter
Occupation: Pigman
Lives at: Ambridge View
Works at: Willow Farm (keeps his pigs and hens on eight acres there)
Churchwarden of: St Stephen's Church

Image

He can be a little too down-to-earth for wife Susan, who still makes him remove shoes (and often mucky overalls) on entry to her pride and joy, Ambridge View.

He made a good job of building the house, even though he had to take a loan from then boss Tom Archer.

Principled and somewhat stubborn, it took him a long time to accept Ed Grundy as daughter Emma's partner. No such problem with son Christopher's wife Alice, although he's not always comfortable as an in-law of the wealthy Aldridges.

■Likes - Bell ringing (he's the tower captain), cricket
■Dislikes - Susan's snobbery
■Highs - Being elected parish council chairman
■Lows - The imprisonment of wife Susan in 1993 for harbouring her brother Clive Horrobin

Christ, I'm Jennifer!!
Jennifer Aldridge
Devoted or doormat? Saint or simperer? There seems no limit to Jennifer's tolerance for her errant husband Brian.

Played by: Angela Piper
Born: 07 January 1945
Status: Married to Brian Aldridge
Occupation: Housewife
Lives at: Home Farm
Whatever nasty surprises he throws at her, she seems capable of getting past them. Whether or not this is to her credit is a matter of opinion but there's no denying her admirable tenacity. Maybe it's the journalist in her which enables her to look at her problems from all angles, or maybe it's her own chequered history with men.
She's had to draw on all of her resources of patience and tolerance for the challenge of the care of Brian and Siobhan's son Ruairi, and has been more than equal to the task. All this while supporting her mother Peggy Woolley's struggle with the progressive decline of Jack, too...
More coffee darling?
Jennifer Aldridge
Likes - Writing (she edits the village website), cooking, shopping
Dislikes - Family unrest
Highs - Discovering the joys of being a grandparent
Lows - Discovering the extent of Brian's deceit

Salve Jim. Retired academic you are easily bored and long for the cut and thrust of debate. In its absence baiting Shula will have to do. Underneath there is just a touch of the old rogue about you

Jim Lloyd:

Played by: John Rowe
Status: Widower
Occupation: Retired university professor
Lives at: Greenacres
Investor in: Jaxx Bar

A retired history professor from Stirling University, Jim is possessed of the assured confidence of those whose intelligence is rarely questioned. To some this may be interpreted as arrogance. His daughter-in-law Shula is continually exasperated. But his boyish charm and zest for life disarm many, and Jim quickly made friends in Ambridge. His sense of adventure can often get him into scrapes, much to the delight of grandson Dan, and the chagrin of long-suffering son Alistair.

■Likes - Magic tricks, good food, cricket and the finer things in life (such as Spurs)
■Dislikes - Stupidity, organised religion (well that second one's a bit off ain't it?)
■Highs - The purchase of his classic Riley (Wish I could!)
■Lows - Has a childish tendency to make son Alistair feel that most things are his fault (bugger Alistair - I'd say "to make everyone")
