It's a pizza cake

Post by Gob »

A Canadian pizza chain is hoping to add a ‘pizza cake’ to its menu that features five layers of crust, cheese, and meat toppings.

The awe-inspiring dish was created by chefs at Boston Pizza. The chain is now asking diners to vote in an online poll on whether the pizza cake should form part of its summer menu.

And it seems the pizza cake may actually become a reality, as it is currently beating out other menu item suggestions by a landslide.

More than 3,100 Boston Pizza fans have voted for the cake – which comes stuffed with slices of peperoni, ham, and sausage.

There is no word on how much the cake would cost if it were actually produced.

In second place is a box of tiny pizza mints – breath fresheners that come slice-shaped in their own miniature Boston Pizza box. The item has only 607 backers.

And in third is a gas-powered pizza cutter that slices through pies with ease. It has received 459 votes.

Other contenders are pizza clippers, pizza car fresheners, a shirt with a triangle-shaped pocket for holding a slice of pizza, as well as a pizza beardkin – a beard-shaped napkin with a hole for one’s mouth that allows for mess-free pizza eating.

Boston Pizza has not yet indicated when it will close voting.

But apparently never one to shy away from pizza-based innovations, the chain (which also operates 40 U.S. locations) has marked its poll with the introduction of a pizza taco, which is currently available for sale in a chipotle chicken and bacon flavor.

I like the gas powered pizza cutter. It could also be used for cutting other stuff. It looks like it has a laser on it too.

I wonder how many pizzas per gallon it gets?

You can vote on it or other ideas here.

Doesn't look very appetizing to me. I never really enjoyed pizza until I started eating it exclusively with a knife & fork.

Anyway, my wife makes a "shepard's pie" type thing every Easter Saturday that is kinda sorta similar to that pizza cake. It is stuffed with shredded roasted pork, home-made sausage, scrambled eggs and ricotta cheese. But no tomato sauce.

Definitely a "type thing", not Shepherd's pie!!

1 tablespoon olive oil
1 brown onion, halved, finely chopped
1 carrot, peeled, finely chopped
2 celery sticks, trimmed, finely chopped
500g lamb mince
2 tablespoons plain flour
500ml (2 cups) beef stock
1 dried bay leaf
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon tomato paste
Salt & freshly ground black pepper
4 (about 200g each) desiree potatoes, peeled, chopped
40g butter
125ml (1/2 cup) milk
Melted butter, to brush

Step 1

Heat oil in a large saucepan over medium-high heat. Add onion, carrot and celery and cook, stirring, for 5 minutes or until soft. Add lamb mince and cook, stirring to break up any lumps, for 5 minutes or until lamb changes colour.
Step 2

Add the flour and cook, stirring, for 2 minutes or until combined. Add stock, bay leaf, Worcestershire sauce and tomato paste. Bring to the boil. Reduce heat to low and cook, stirring occasionally, for 30 minutes or until sauce thickens. Taste and season with salt and pepper.
Step 3

Meanwhile: cook potato in a saucepan of salted boiling water for 15 minutes or until tender. Drain well. Return to the pan with the butter. Use a potato masher or fork to mash until smooth. Add milk and use a wooden spoon to stir until combined. Taste and season with salt and pepper.
Step 4

Preheat oven to 200°C. Spoon lamb mixture into a 2L (8-cup) capacity ovenproof baking dish. Top with mashed potato and use a fork to spread over lamb mixture. Brush with butter. Bake in preheated oven for 20 minutes or until mashed potato is golden brown. Serve immediately

I'm with Strop on this one, (and I'm not usually on the same side as Mr. Strawberries and Banana Slices On Pizza when it comes to matters gastronomical) Dave that may be quite tasty, but it no way shape or form resembles a "Shepherd's pie"....

There's a little Irish place near where we live that makes an excellent shepherd's pie, (very similar to the one pictured) and I make one like it occasionally. (Of course being me, I also add some diced jalapeno or hot sauce as well...)
