They are not flavours you would normally connect.

But Marmite is challenging perceptions of taste by combining its yeast spread with chocolate.

The ‘Very Peculiar’ milk chocolate bars cost £3 and will be available from Monday in stores, including BHS and Debenhams, and online.

Like the brand’s advertising slogan, the new line is likely to prompt ‘love it’ or ‘hate it’ reviews.

The strong-smelling 100g bar is made with 98 per cent milk chocolate and two per cent Marmite flavouring. This includes yeast extract, onion powder and garlic powder.

Chef Rowley Leigh, owner of Le Café Anglais in West London, agreed to try the new product for the Daily Mail. He was not impressed.

‘The thing is, they have so little faith in the product that there is hardly any Marmite in it. Although you can smell it quite strongly, the taste only comes at the finish,’ he said.

‘They have tried to make it as mild and sweet and innocuous as they can. It starts out as slightly bland chocolate but, in the background, it is deeply nauseating.

‘If you like Marmite, why would you not just eat Marmite?’

Unilever, the company behind Marmite, has described the 100g bars as ‘a devious treat for the in-laws’ at Christmas or ideal for those struggling to find a present for a loved one.

The chocolate initially forms part of Marmite’s limited edition Christmas range.

I'm not a Brit, but I have to wonder.

If you really like Marmite, and if you really think that Marmite and chocoloate would make a good combination -- hey, you never know; I've had combinations of ingredients I don't like individually, but the combinations came out great -- why not (a) just spread (if that's the right word) some Marmite on some chocolate and (b) use real (dark) chocolate instead of that "milk chocolate" knockoff?

there is nothing that would go together worse, other than vomit and chocolate. And even then, if you vomited after eating chocolate it mightn't be too bad.

There again, being marmited to death would not be the worst way to go...

Andrew--well I think it's a given that nothing will make marmite taste any worse--except maybe mixing it with vegimite.

Don't fancy the chocolate however these are absolutely bloody gorgeous

mind you they could make the bag a bit bigger they are seriously moreish.

Oh yummy,. I'll send them the suggestion, with any luck they'll do dark and light versions.

I really must try this Marmite stuff. Is it available by interwebs? If not, would one of my Aussie/Brit friends be willing to send a jar my way? I will reimburse costs.

you can usually find it in any store that has a decent imported foods section. My problem is that it's simply not on my mind when I'm in a store with one of those. The one time it was I was broke.
