FARREN COLLINS
Blind at the bat, they still hear the sound of cricket
Even dogs are monitored to keep barking at a minimum
IF THEY cannot see, how do they know where the ball is? This is what Eddie Jacobs asked yesterday as he looked out on one of the cricket pitches where the matches for the Blind Cricket World Cup will be played.
Jacobs, the “groundsman”, is used to preparing cricket pitches, but blind cricket is puzzling to him too. He is responsible for maintenance at the venue and was yesterday building a ramp to assist disabled people who will be attending the tournament, which starts at the Western Province Cricket Club today.
Special considerations needed to be made for the tournament venue and adjustments were made to the pitches to meet requirements for hosting blind cricket.
Grass was cut to a length that allows the ball to roll better, boundaries were shortened and even the dogs in the neighbouring park are monitored to keep their barking at a minimum.
According to Blind Cricket SA National Co-ordinator Armand Bam, blind cricket is played with an audible cricket ball that has ball bearings in it to allow the players to hear it. Bowlers yell “play!” before bowling and roll the ball along the ground as opposed to bowling overhead.
South Africa were winners of the inaugural World Cup in 1998, and seven countries are taking part in this year’s 40-over tournament over the next 10 days.
Teams consist of 11 players — four of whom are totally blind and seven a mix of partially blind and partially sighted. Totally blind players are awarded double points for runs scored

Thank God for your posting of this. I was all weak from a lack of SA stories.
And you can call me @w.

So being blind would be a draw back for playing cricket, exactly how?
I'm surprised they felt the need to set up a separate league for it....

Gob posted about that when Hughes was hit by the ball a couple of days back. Sad to learn that he died. Has any baseball batter been killed by a pitch?
Asked and answered: Ray Chapman - the only one ever in MLB. John Dodge in the minors. Hartog Hamburger was killed by a driven ball in the Dutch leagues.
Cricket ball deaths:
Darryn Randall (South Africa, 32) – 2013
Zulfiqar Bhatti (Pakistan, 22) – 2013
Alcwyn Jenkins (England, 72) – 2009
Raman Lamba (India, 38) – 1998
Ian Folley (England, 30) – 1993
Abdul Aziz (Pakistan, 18) – 1959
George Summers (England, 25) – 1870

It is the statistically predicted outcome.
play cricket = increased chance of being killed by being whacked in the head by a cricket ball.

Blatant racism.

I think the number of deaths in cricket is primarily a commentary on the quality of the pitching in that pseudo-sport...

Yes - it's highly effective, isn't it? Get 'em out by Friday (and by any means possible)

I knew a guy who was killed playing slow pitch softball. He was playing first and went for a low errant throw that was down the lie a bit and the runner ran into him with his knee hitting the guy in the head. He was in a comma for three days and then died.
In fast pitch softball I hit a lline drive back to the pitcher who was not fast enough with his glove (nor his reflexes) and it nailed him between the eyes. He fell backwards and was out cold. Thankfully only a concussion and black eyes.

How does it look? You could save me the trouble of having the colonoscopy scheduled for Thursday.
Do folks want a blow by blow of the prep like Gob gave?
