The fight against global warming

Just hours after Hillary Clinton unveiled her presidential campaign's push to solve global warming through an aggressive carbon-cutting plan, she sauntered up the steps of a 19-seat private jet in Des Moines, Iowa.

The aircraft, a Dassault model Falcon 900B, burns 347 gallons of fuel per hour. And like all Dassault business jets, Hillary's ride was made in France.

The Trump-esque transportation costs $5,850 per hour to rent, according to the website of Executive Fliteways, the company that owns it.

And she has used the same plane before, including on at least one trip for speeches that brought her $500,000 in fees.

On Monday the Democratic presidential front-runner announced the details of her initiative to tackle climate change, calling it 'one of the most urgent threats of our time.'

But shortly afterward, a videographer working with the conservative America Rising PAC spotted her at the private air terminal in Des Moines.

FIfteen seconds of video shot just after 12:00 noon, local time, shows Clinton walking up the plane's stairs while an aide hodls a giant black umbrella over her head to sheld her from falling rain.

'Despite her campaign’s best efforts to rebrand her as a down-to-earth fighter for "everyday Americans," Hillary Clinton’s jet-setting ways are just further confirmation that she’s out of touch with the American people,' the group's communications driector Jeff Bechdel told DailyMail.com.

'It’s that kind of hypocrisy that makes the majority of voters say Clinton is not honest or trustworthy.

Lots of people fly, including lots of climate scientists and passionate environmentalists. Why attack Hillary? What about all the other candidates?

How many pontificate about global warming, (hint: not many Repubs,) then take flight on private jets?

Well, Al Gore springs immediately to mind...

That said, chartered airplanes (including, nowadays, jets) are a well-established campaign tool used by politicians of all political stripes. It doesn't make any sense for any Democrat who wants to win to voluntarily, unilaterally give up any tool in the modern political toolbox.

Another Dem at it? "Do as I say, don't do as I do." ;)

One of the least intelligent arguments of all time. Recycled yet again.

I'll give you some time to think about it.

No need to, that goes without saying.

So where do you draw the line? What makes jet aircraft uniquely un-environmental? Do you think Democrats should give up all modern forms of transportation (except for Tesla automobiles?)? Or should they give up the use of fossil-fuel generated electricity, too? (And any hope of winning another national election?) Sheesh.

Rubato is right (I don't say that every day); it's a silly, unintelligent argument. Kudos for recycling, though. ;)

INot everyone can make an argument that makes rubato sound reasonable by comparison.

Way to go Gob!

If a person makes a huge deal about protecting the environment and responsible use of fuels etc., then for that person to use private jet transport which has a large environmental impact per person carried... well, that is kind of hypocritical.

I do not imagine for one moment that the election of any politician is as important as reducing environmental damage. They should all fly for commercial since their urgency to show their face somewhere is not even remotely as important as the well-being of the general public and the planet.

The suggestion that political egos are more important than society is rejected.

It's a question of necessity

A) she is not flying solo but with advisors, strategists, press etc.. Enough to fill a private jet

2) she has to maintain a schedule that doesn't allow for waiting for regular flights.

- she is using this jet for "business" purposes.

I read this article waiting for the moment it said she was using this jet for something that could be considered wasteful. A private dinner engagement vacation etc. but that never happened so it's a complete non starter.

So you agree - polticians' desires and egos are more important than social responsibility. Because Hillary must be elected, screw the environment - she has a schedule and a very, very important date. And the rest of 'em

Bingo!

I knew someone would get it.

The claim of hypocrisy is just staggeringly mindless.

Another vote for "politicians' schedules are the most important thing in the universe" (next to them getting elected of course).

Only an idiot would claim, as you appear to do, that unless you travel exclusively by bicycle or canoe you cannot be an environmentalist.

lR claimed , with wide assent here, that it was hypocritical for environmentalists to use canoes made of plastic to protest an oil drilling rig.

Now I don't expect him to know that there are other feedstocks used to make plastic, natural gas is the major starting material for nylon, for one example. But the claim of hypocrisy should not convince a thoughtful 10th-grader.

Hypocrisy does not address the substance of the argument in any case. It is just a way for stupid people to change the subject without dealing with the facts. If a obese glutton says that we need to control our diets and lose weight to be healthy, it is still true.

While we're vastly oversimplifying positions:

So you think doing anything the least bit detrimental to the environment should automatically be verboten by anyone advancing an environmental cause.

So anything more than sitting still ranting at anyone within earshot about the environment until you drop dead of dehydration starvation or exposure is out of the question

Got it thanks.

Oh I had a big reply typed up and then lost it because I didn't notice that wesw had posted in between times.

Summary - I don't care if she charters a jet or not. I'm interested in the perceived notion that what's important to one person trumps (no pun intended) what is important to many. I'd include myself in that since I'm fair sure that what is important to me is more important than what is important to others.

With all the other stuff Hillary has supposedly done, alarm over using a private jet while expressing concern for the environment is small potatoes
