I'm 46 next month and I have finally had to admit that my eyesight for reading was fucked.

So £220 later I succumbed and got my first pair of varifocal glasses. It's a bloody revelation... No more pushing my distance glasses up to be able to read labels or my phone.

Thankfully the "hipster" style frames that are fashionable right now means I can get away with the bigger lenses needed.

The opticians gave me the worst case scenario, that I might get headaches or be unable to adjust to them, but within a couple of hours I was totally comfortable with them, I did fork out for the premium lenses with as little blurring from the lens blending as possible, so I guess that helped.

But damn you age, I still feel 21 in my head!

They've been threatening me with varifocals for years, have resisted so far.

Mind you, if I have to push my specs any further down my nose so as to read, they'll end up on my chin. I wonder if a selfie stick would work?

I never wore glasses, but when I got into my 40s my arms ceased to be long enough to let me read and so I bought reading glasses. I still don't need anything for distance, but I have to carry those damn glasses with me everywhere I go; I even have to use half frames at the opera so I can watch the stage and read the translation at my seat).

I've worn glasses or contacts since I was in 8th grade or so. I was one of the last of my friends to have to need reading glasses, but when my lenses are in, they really help. If I'm wearing my glasses, I just take them off to read (I'm nearsighted).

The most difficult thing for me is the transition from close reading to distance -- like if I'm on a device, and then look up at the TV, its takes my eyes longer to make that shift in focus. Sigh.

Me too. $7.00 for three pair at Walmar. (2.50 mag).
I have a strap and let the glasses dangle around my neck for when I need them.

Do you have a picture of yourself on your computer? If so, go here and have a highly efficient, technical and unbiased appraisal of how old you look.

I know it's efficient because it said I look like I'm 41 yrs old, which is actually true even though I'm just a couple of years older than that...

That works really well Joe, it says I look 39, which is quite right.
