When I see a list like this, I can't help but think something is rotten in the state of Denmark.

And yet the Danes saved the country's entire Jewish community from the Nazis in one of the greatest escape and rescue actions ever undertaken -- even keeping tabs on and retrieving those who had been captured and sent to the Theresienstadt concentration camp.

Dales, I know you're ancient, but WWII ended in 1945 mate, 70 years ago.



Danes TODAY have an amazing society and social structure.

They also had a well-organized and effective resistance movement.. The harbormaster for the Carlsberg brewery helped organize the evacuation of Jews, Neils Bohr helped dozens of Jewish scientists escape to the west, helped them get jobs and was active in the resistance (and had to escape). The chief engineer for Bang and Olufsen sent designs for improved radios back to England which the resistance used. they built underground factories to make machine pistols (the assault weapons of their day).

The German government had prohibited Germans from accepting or keeping any Nobel Prize after jailed peace activist Carl von Ossietzky had received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1935. De Hevesy placed the resulting solution on a shelf in his laboratory at the Niels Bohr Institute. It was subsequently ignored by the Nazis who thought the jar—one of perhaps hundreds on the shelving—contained common chemicals. After the war, de Hevesy returned to find the solution undisturbed and precipitated the gold out of the acid. The gold was returned to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and the Nobel Foundation. They re-cast the medals and again presented them to Laue and Franck.[12][13] ... "
