Lawyers should be commended rather than condemned, according to a legal marketer who has been celebrating “Love Your Lawyer Day” since 2001. The event takes place Friday.
Lawyer marketer Nader Anise says the day, created by the group he founded, is celebrated on the first Friday of November. “Call your attorney and say ‘Happy Lawyer’s Day!’ or ‘Thanks for doing a great job,’ or even send a gift, flowers or a card,” Anise says in a press release. The National Law Journal (sub. req.) has a story.
The ABA Law Practice Division has passed a resolution (PDF) calling for recognition of the day as a way to celebrate lawyers and express gratitude for their contributions. The resolution calls on lawyers to celebrate the day “by providing pro bono legal services to their communities and supporting charitable causes that promote the administration of justice.”
ABA Law Practice Division chair Tom Bolt tells the National Law Journal that he wants to address negative public perceptions of lawyers. “I don’t think the message is getting out,” he said. “We need to educate the public as to the role of lawyers and what they are doing as positive contributors to society.”
Flowers, chocolates, and cute text messages all accepted.

One of my classmates from Georgetown, now a UW-Madison law school prof, posted this on her Facebook page. Many of us who are practicing attorneys replied with this:

To Guin, Sue, and BigRR I extend good wishes and thank you for your presence in the field.
If I had time I would happily look up some good lawyer jokes.

I've paid enough hard-earned money over the years to:
Criminal Attorneys
Divorce Attorneys
Bankruptcy Attorneys
among others for them to live quite well.

Wish they'd picked another day than my dad's birthday... but I hope y'all have a wonderful day and feel good about what you achieve today and every day.
God bless.

The operative word in the name is "your", i.e. "Love *YOUR* Lawyer (It's the Other Guy's Lawyer Who's a Bastard)"

In my experience it's common to have at least a few clients who think you're the bastard at least some of the time - but that's coming from someone who has practiced largely in family law and criminal law.
Today my client told the court s/he wanted to fire me mid-hearing, mid-witness - just before my cross was to start. (This is a notoriously difficult client and I'm already the 2nd attorney assigned to the case; I was great until I couldn't make the client's bad behavior go away as if by magic. I've put tons of hours in, taken late night calls/texts, bent over backward - no good deed goes unpunished!) I have to say this was a first in my practice experience, so maybe it's fitting it should happen so close to my departure from active litigation practice.
The court inquired as to my education & experience on the record, found me to be adequate counsel and told my client s/he could proceed pro se but wouldn't earn a continuance by the demand. S/he chose to proceed with me as counsel, and by the end of it I got an apology and hugs. Until the court issues its ruling not in favor of my client, an inevitability due solely to the client's own behavioral choices - then I'm a bastard (bitch!) again. (I anticipate a Bar complaint. Oh joy!)
I'm looking forward to sitting with terminally ill patients; I think they'll appreciate me more. As a backup plan I'm looking into lighthouse keeper openings in New England . . .

According to the latest research there are only three lawyer jokes.
Everything else is the God's own truth.

Fortunately our lawyers here have reasonable senses of humor.
I recall some lawyers having no sense of humor at all over those Budweiser commercials some years back where they had lawyers being roped and thrown. "Out of the gate comes a fat tax attorney". Humorous unless you are a fat tax attorney I guess.

But us non-fat tax attorneys just rolled with it.
