Two yachtsmen who have been rescued nine times in seven months have been described as a "catastrophe waiting to happen" and urged to "leave UK waters".

In the latest mishap, US citizens Bob Weise and Steve Shapiro, both 71, had to seek help in Hayle Harbour, Cornwall, when their sail boat tipped over, causing a fire on board.

Veteran sailor Sir Robin Knox-Johnston is among those criticising the pair.

The duo previously told BBC News they were experienced enough for the trip.

The boat, named Nora, left Norway in July and is aiming for the US state of Maine.

Sir Robin said: "This is no longer a joke.

"It costs between £6,000 and £8,000 every time a lifeboat is launched. These guys are costing the RNLI a fortune.

"They need to frankly pack it in or, I hate to say it, get the hell out of our waters."

James Instance, from Falmouth Coastguard, said he was not aware of anyone being rescued so many times in a short space of time.

LJ, the boat has a stove. They cook food on the stove. It is a gas-fed stove. Boat tipped over. Wood bits catch fire.

If your boat has a fire on it, tipping it over should put the dang fire out!!!

Did the Titanic with its big kitchen burn down? No! Because it got all wet like boats get when they break up and sink.

8-)

Why? Sinking the boat pretty much ensures water is er.... everywhere. But why do you assume that a capsized yacht is soaking wet everywhere? Most of it remains above the water - unless/until it fills with water.

Actually, that gives me an idea: maybe somebody ought to suggest that those guys put a pair of outriggers on their boat?

You know, like this...but bigger?

And they want to cross the North Atlantic in January? These guys are totally nuts and on a suicide mission.

That boat cannot begin to handle any heavy weather. She is loaded wrong. Her beam to length ratio looks off, and both her mast and her bowsprit look too short.

Yeah, but that bicycle will come in handy...

It looks a bit like a modified river or canal vessel, where having a bicycle could be useful. Not gear I would ever have on deck on a ocean crossing, or even offshore. Like I said, nuts.

These two obviously have an entirely different understanding of the term "ship-shape" than I do.

"Ship-shate?" That makes no sense at all.
