I just spent five days in Chicago, my first trip to the city where I actually got to look around and see some sights (previous trips had been for business with virtually no personal/recreational time). It is a really nice town! I was especially impressed by the Field Museum, which I think is probably the best natural history museum in the country -- it has both the American and the Smithsonian museums beat, hands down. The Lincoln Park Zoo was delightful, as were all the other public spaces we visited. The city itself is beautiful to look at with many spectacular views of interesting architecture and landscapes. There was so much to see and do we didn't have time to get more than an inkling of what the city has to offer. I hope to go back for more.

And yes, I did have Chicago-style "pizza." It's fine for what it is, but whatever it is, it's definitely not pizza.

Chicago-style "deep dish" pizza is more like an apple-pie shell made out of pizza-crust dough and filled with tomato sauce and other stuff.  It is to real pizza what a NASCAR Sprint Cup 'stock' car is to a truly 'stock' car as it comes off the assembly line.

I don't think I ever had a chicago style pizza that deep, but I do enjoy the thicker crust and deeper indentation for the sauce and toppings. I prefer it to the thinner crust varieties made elsewhere.

those are deeper than the ones I have eaten, but some of that filling is likely crust on the bottom. And pizzas have always been "pies", some are just thicker than others.

I love Chicago (or Sicilian) style pizza if it's made properly...

If it's nothing but a whole bunch of dough, fugettaboutit...

A properly made Chicago style pizza is supposed to have an olive oil crunch to the crust and a really flavorful and bountiful sauce....

It really puts the "pie" in the phrase "pizza pie"....

Exactamundo re the Field, Sue. If you get a chance to go back, visit the Navy Pier and explore the small treasure of the Driehaus Museum. It's well worth the time.

If you have to eat it with a knife and fork (and for the Chicago thingies you definitely do), it's not a pizza. As documented by the scandals generated by politicians in New York, pizza is eaten with the hands. If you can't fold a slice so that the grease drips out the channel formed by the crease at the distal end, then you're not eating pizza.

While I like those pizzas as well, I don't mind using a knife and fork, and find the pizza baked with the sauce on top and an abundance of toppings is much more satisfying to my tastes. The only pizzas I hate are the super thin crust ones where the crust is almost like a cracker.

I guess my NYC citizenship is in the process of being revoked now.

I ate Chicago pizza without a knife & fork a couple months ago. I realize you prefer toppings on cardboard, but not everyone does.
