England captain Alastair Cook has become the youngest player to score 10,000 Test runs.

Aged 31, five months and five days, he achieved the landmark by reaching five on the fourth day of the second Test against Sri Lanka at Chester-le-Street.

He brought up the milestone with a leg-side clip for four off Nuwan Pradeep and saluted the England balcony.

"It's a very special moment for me," Cook said. "You forget about all the hard times you have as a cricketer."

He beat India legend Sachin Tendulkar's record of 31 years, 10 months and 20 days, which has stood since 2005.

Cook went on to make 47 not out as England won the Test by nine wickets.

"...all the hard times you have as a cricketer."
I can imagine...

The constant struggle on the field against overpowering ennui must take its toll... fighting to somehow stay awake, hour after hour after hour...

Not to mention the bitter disappointment of a warm salad fork or a soggy cucumber sandwich at the lunch break...

ETA:

And then there are all the medical maladies common to cricket players...

The blood circulation problems, loss of lower body muscle mass, and bone brittleness brought on by prolonged periods of inactivity...

Yay! I thought he was going to retire before he got to that magic number.

All it takes is the will to succeed, I suppose. On to the next 10,000 Test runs.

Nice post, Gob. As you'll note, even a rose benefits from being surrounded by manure.

I suppose that after 10,000 test runs, he'll now be given an opportunity to try to score some actual runs?

After 10,000 tests, if he hasn't got the hang of it he probably never will...
