Anything worth doing

Post by Bicycle Bill »

is worth overdoing.

American Airlines declares itself the "winner" after FAA awards flights between the USA and Cuba.
Not only did American get four daily Miami-Havana flights, probably the most desirable prize in the package, but also it received a single daily Havana flight from Charlotte, its second biggest hub and also an airport where American serves 70 destinations it does not serve from Miami.

So Charlotte seems to make sense, given its importance in American’s route structure.  But it is worth asking whether there sufficient demand for all of the winners:  19 daily Havana flights from nine cities on eight airlines, plus a weekly Houston flight on United.

South Florida is home to about a million Cuban Americans, and the principal beneficiary of the 14 daily Havana routes the DOT awarded.  Miami will have six daily flights on three airlines, including Delta and Frontier with single daily flights.  Nearby Fort Lauderdale will have six more daily flights on JetBlue, Spirit and Southwest.

Other cities with daily Havana flights would include LA (Alaska Airlines), Atlanta (Delta Airlines), Orlando (JetBlue), Newark (United Airlines), New York/JFK (1 each thru Delta or JetBlue), and Tampa (Southwest Airlines).  And there is Houston.

Yes, I suppose I could agree with you ... but then we'd both be wrong, wouldn't we?
