I was at a major-league baseball game on Thursday where I watched the Milwaukee Brewers put a whuppin' on the Atlanta Braves.  The final score was 11 to 3; the Brewers jumped out to a two-run lead in their half of the first inning and never looked back.

Since it is my custom to keep a scorecard anytime I am at a professional game, I had noticed that the Brewers had been able to score in each of the eight innings they sent batters to the plate (since they were ahead after Atlanta's 9th inning the bottom half of the 9th did not need to be played).  However, after the game was over and I was listening to the radio announcers recapping the game, I learned that this was the FIRST TIME EVER in the team's 46-year history that they had played a game and scored at least one run in each of the innings in which they came up to bat.  Pretty impressive, right?

THEN they went on to point out that this was only the 16th time in Major League history that this had happened in a nine-inning game since records began being kept back in the 1880s, and only the third occurrence since 1999!

By comparison, a perfect game — which is defined as a game in which a team's pitcher (or combination of pitchers) pitches a victory that lasts a minimum of nine innings, no runs are scored by the opponent, and no opposing player reaches base — has been accomplished a total of 21 times since the modern era began in 1900, including Don Larsen's perfect game in the 1956 World Series.

So Thursday afternoon the Brewers made a little bit of history, and I WAS THERE!!!

YAY!

Cool. But there is a big difference. With a perfect game, there may be a bit of luck, but mostly it is the pitcher doing his thing sublimely; those who watch see a rare glimpse of just how awesome a pitcher can be when it all comes together. With the consecutive scoring innings, it is basically just regular baseball with the rare oddity that one team scores every inning. Still, pretty fun to be there to see it!

They beat Atlanta! Cool.

So Thursday afternoon the Brewers made a little bit of history, and I WAS THERE!!!

Must be nice to see the Brewers making history rather than being history for a change...

I see that they are history big time this year; they're down by 22 games...

Did notice one thing interesting, though.  If they want, any fan entering the park can pick up (for free) something called "Game Day", which is a little booklet that talks a bit about the team, the stadium, how the team gives back to the community (through charity events and appearances, and things of that nature), and upcoming games and promotions.  I noticed that on Aug. 28th they are scheduled to be giving away a Jonathan Lucroy backpack (shaped kinda like a catcher's chest protector) to all kids 14 and under as a "back to school" promotion.
Neat, huh?
There's just one itsy-bitsy little problem.  The Brewers traded Lucroy to the Rangers back on the first of August.....

I saw him at a game in SF a few months back. He was the best thing on their team.

I saw something very rare (moreso than a perfect game) in my first MLB game, Fenway Park on 1985: a player hit for the cycle. Not just any player: Rich Gedman became only the sixth CATCHER to do so. (He also plated seven runs, in a 13-1 pasting of the Blue Jays.)

Well, my two teams are both doing pretty well...

The Giants are hanging on to a one game lead in the NL West, and the Nats are up seven and a half in the NL East...

It looks like the Cleveland Indians are making some history too...

I haven't looked it up, but I'll bet it's been many years since they were in first place in their division this late in the season...

Okay, so the Cavs were able to bring the first major championship too Cleveland in 52 years...

But the Indians?

The slogan "Cleveland, City Of Champions" is just to bizarre to contemplate...

Not really...the Indians won the AL Central in 2007, and the wild card in 2013.

and the Nats are up seven and a half in the NL East...

And then there are the Phillies. Can a Cubs fan tutor me on the art of hope for next season and how long I need to wait?

Chicago Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant is no stranger to making history, and on Thursday he continued that tradition as he did something that no player in baseball history has ever done.

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Bryant became the first player under the age of 25 to have three games in a single season in which he hit two home runs and racked up four total hits.

Geez, the Cubs aren't just winning their division, they have the highest winning percentage in all of Major League Baseball...

The Indians are still up by seven...

I wonder if they're really going to force their fans to sit out in that chilly October evening weather...

They're usually so considerate about that...

Red Sox are leading the AL wild cartd and only 1/2 game out of first in what will be the tightest division race in baseball. (The Yankees are in 4th place...6.5 games behind the Blue Jays.)
